Gator Question

My parents are thinking about getting a Johndeere Gator, 4X4, with a snow plow. The question we all have is will the gator do well with traction? We have a paved driveway, that has a VERY steep hill. I currently plow it with my pickup, but will be going off to college,(and then the real world), so they are thinking about when Im gone. So the big question is how well is the traction?

Thanks Tom

If you throw two or three dozen pieces of oak firewood in the bed, you should have a pretty good amount of traction with that 4x4. Chains in the rear will also help.

However, if it got icy under the snow and you tried to plow your way back up the hill, forget it, not gonna happen.

For half the cost of a gator and snow plow you could buy a nice little tractor that would do the job.

We had a older one at the golf course, 6x4 gator, snowmobile belt type setup drive line, I think it was a overpriced piece of junk

I don't have a gator but I have a JD Buck 4 wheeler. The tires are made for digging in dirt and mud not ice and snow. I pull a drag harrow to try to break up ice or at least scratch it to give traction. When you get on to slick of ice it just sits on top and spins. It has plenty of power but no traction.

No.
Of the many things I can do - work - abuse with my Gater, I leave it parked in the snow.

4 wheelers and gators are belt drive junk. I have a Polaris quad that is junk. It only works in snow that is less then 6" deep.

Save your money and get a tractor. A gator likely costs $8k and up. For that kind of money you could get something far better.

We have lots of gators around here just the other day I was going through the neighborhood on the way home and the UPS man was stopped in the road looking at something across the lake and there was one that must have been 10ft long.......What Honey....Oh... Wrong kind of gator. Sorry

Nice thing is they are more manueverable than a truck and quite versitile for yard/garden/woods chores AND almost as fun as an ATV. My Rhino with a 60" Moose plow was a blessing to have last winter. With 26" Maxxis Bighorn tires I only got stuck twice - once in about a foot of packed snow and once after an rain/ice storm left the hollow at my garden property glare ice. That had me turned my sideways. Next year a few ice screws are going in each tire. I bought it at a good price figuring if I didn't like it I could turn around a make a few bucks but let me tell you I like it more than my ATVs and use it nearly every weekend for some sort of chore or just a pleasure cruise thru the woods and fenclines.

Good riding,
Bill
