Ive got a small area 20x25 pea rock/ pavers that seems to grow weeds faster than I can pull'em, Ive tried all sorts of liquid stuff thats supposed to last for months but cpl weeks later theyre back!
My dad used to have some stuff that he bought in 30lb bags that looked like white BB's, it was water activated and DID last for months, up to 4-5 months in the dry season. I dont think I ever knew the name of the stuff and hes forgotten (been 20 years )
that description ring a bell with anyone? or any other ideas?....thanks...OCG

It sounds like the description of Tordon which is a restricted use pesticide.

I nearly always carried a 3 pound coffee can full of it in the tractor so that I could treat areas of field bindweed as I spotted them.

Garden shops and places like home depot and lowes should have a product called preen, which is basically a preemergent herbicide used in raspberrys and such, it comes in a granular form. it may come under other names also.

Hey oldCrane guy...

it was called Atrazine

horrible stuff, but it did the job

and what are you talking about in the 20x25 area? inches, feet, yards, sections, miles?

Sounds line monobor chlorate to me. I've used it for years, works great. 20 years ago, may have been its stronger cousin, polybor chlorate. It was outlawed. Monobor may be as well, I don't know- but I've got quite a bit of my bag left.

I THINK THE SPRAY PRODUCT YOU NEED IS PRAMITOL.IT STERILIZES THE SOIL WHERE YOU SPRAY IT.YOU NEED TO SPRAY JUST BEFORE A RAIN.I'VE USED IT AND IT WORKS GREAT.MARK

Preen- Its a lawn and garden, yellowish, granular, that is sprinkled on with an applicator tip made right on the can. Found at most Lawn and garden places. Basically Treflan. It keeps seeds from germinating, but will not kill plants already growing.

Dachtal comes in wetable powder or granuals. Its a light grey color. Kinda like preen. Spray or sprinkle it on. Keeps new seeds from germinating but can be used around existing plants without harming them.

Pramitol is a soil sterilant. It kills the soil. Nothing growing will live, Nothing will sprout. Neighbor put way too much on Johnson grass in the early 70's and nothing grew in those spots for 8 or 10 years. Bad stuff, use to be used by the Electric companies around sub-stations.

Atrazine is usually a white liquid, Pellet (forgot the real term, it disolved in water). Generally agricultural corn herbicide. It will kill most everything growing or sprouting, except corn and grain sorghum. Cant use it around flowers or veggies. Have to be real careful, it will "move" if you get a big rain. Also dont use near a well or watershed where it may leach into. Probably want to stay away from this unless you have used it before. It requires a Private Pesticide applicators permit to buy.

There are probably others.

Easiest for a small area. Spray with roundup first. It will kill all that is growing. Then follow up with Preen or dachtal granuals. The Preen will keep anything else from growing for a good 3-4 months.

Good luck.
