New buck knife. Disappointed

Hey folks,
I had a couple of Buck knives over the years and liked them but, for some reason, have been able to hold onto Old Timers longer (not that I ever worked with dishonest/forgetful people). Anyway, while on vacation, I saw some nice Bucks in walmart and bought 2 Stockman versions as gifts. Didn't look at them because of the Buck rep that I always knew of. Opened them yesterday and both have China stamped on the blade. WTF???

Done venting now...

Dave

Hey Dave! You made me take out my Buck stockman and look at the blades. Well the electrician blade was made in china, but the long blade and the castrating blade don't have anything on them, except Buck 373. Think I'll be able to cut a bolt in two ? Maybe if I use a 10 pound hammer. I would still rather have an old timer, when it comes time to sharpen it!, but couldn't find one when I needed one, and had to buy the Buck.

I had planned on giving them as a gift but too embarassed to give an american icon with china stamped on it. Going to send them back home and have my brother return them. Went to the Buck website and they show 2 Stockmans, one for 50 bucks and one for 30 bucks. When you click the 50 buck one, it has an American Flag by it and the 30 buck one doesn't. Could have been pointed out at the store. I've still got the OT that my dad gave me 30 years ago and 2 others, guess I'm good for life.

I dont go to Walmart, for ANYTHING. I cant stand the thought of going into a store that has all the merchandise made by commies. (not to mentions the cheap 8astards the Walton family)

You bought a knife in a Walmart, and you were shocked that it said "made in china"

Last time I shopped at a walmart, it was in a little brown building outside FLW, Mo. Guess I better wake up.

I found an old Buck knife in a flea market a couple years ago, had 373 stamped on the blade, so I'm purty sure it's American made, since there was no mention of China anywhere. I paid $8 for it, sharpened it, polished the brass, sanded gouges and scratches out of it, and even though you can tell it's had a hard life, it's still the best outdoor using around the yard knife I've ever had, and it's probably older'n me. (I'm 51) I don't imagine I'll ever need another new one before I'm dead.

Can't answer for the new ones, but I carried a Buck electricians knife for over 30 years. Finally wore the wood handles so thin and the blade was getting loose that I retired it. Been sharpened so many times I had to grind the stop off twice. Too bad when a quality tool builder goes to a cheaper product. Of course you don't need to spend much time looking for them when they're lost--just another throw away item!!

Mine says "Buck 112" I found mine in abandoned rental property. I've carried it for maybe twenty years. It's a good one! Hope I never lose it. What is a 112?

That's the ones you don't loose..

Those are Buckanese knives....hehe!

For an expatriate living in Deutschland, I'd think you would have easy access to some of the finest cutlery made worldwide. I go out of my way to find Boker Tree Brand or Hen&Rooster (Bertram) knives, both Soligen made, and I've never left the States.

Lots of folks like their Bucks, but they're too difficult to sharpen.....a case where the blades are too damned hard. The wife and kids bought me a large, new Case knife...made like a Buck Folder, for my 51st. While I am sure it is a quality instrument, it is too damned heavy and clumsy...like a Buck folder. I could pry the brass ends off and lighten it by about 2 pounds....hehe! I think they are garish looking... sorta like something an Arab tribesman would carry.....a miniature scimitar. Yuck! Of course, I told the kids thank you very much, told them it was the very best knife I had ever seen, and promptly hid it in a drawer:).

I now do my tool and knife shopping at flea markets and antique stores.

Pick out the old, US made stuff.

My favorite pliers that I use on the farm, CT brand, now made in China. I am sure guarding my older US made ones.

Keep in mind Walmart does not pay the same price for goods that other retailers pay. More often than not manufacturers lower the quality to sell to them. I was in the retail business for a number of years and studied them. Brand selling is very common. (popular brands lowering their quality and selling to the big discount retailers) Shopping brands only, will eventually get you cheated. A lot of high quality, high priced manufacturers have sold out to junk peddlers over the last 30 years.

I read this post this morning, and thought I better look at two IHC knives that I just love because they were given to me my great friends. Yep CHINA. Yep still love the knives, but....

I wonder what is up with that, I was a big Schrade fan, being they were in NYS, in business a long time and made a great product, but that changed when they went out or whatever eventually happened, not sure what the status of them is.

Last summer I picked up a new Buck 503 with their symbol on the base of the blade and U.S.A, was $29.00 at Walmart, just happened to see these on the shelf, good quality knife, I used to like Schrade steel, years back I thought it held and edge longer, but this Buck ( and I'm careful with it) seems to just right for a pocket knife, the last Schrade I bought, locking mechanism failed and would no longer stay locked, it was the last of their production too, before they went out. Wonder what is up with Buck, thought I found a U.S. made product at Walmart, which I don't like supporting, but sometimes have to shop there.

Last year my american made, Schrade pocket knife broke at the locking mechanism also so i remember that someone told me they had a liftime guarantee. I did some reserch and found they don't make american blades any more. I sent them my broke one and asked if they could maybe fix it rather then send me a China one, well i guess its to much to fix so they just sent me a new China one plus a new shealth and my old knife back. I guess a free China made knife is better then paying for a China made one.

I feel for the brand decay.
I recieved a thankyou gift from students (after graduation) A boxed set of Winchester commemorative knives 7" hunting, a two blade folding, and a single blade pocket. All China engraved.
The pocket knife list trim components of the handle within 3 days (in my pocket not used!!

I also got a Christmas gift od a Smith and Wesson 3.5" lock blade. China and self disassembling many lost aprts. It scares me silly. Jim

The blade on a Case isnt even the same color stainless as other knives.I had a Case and it was my best knife. Now I have a 14 dollar Imperial[Ireland] Does not hold an edge long.Schrade was Imperial Schrade but closed up shop in Ellenville ,NY. Town with no work now.Maybe Schrade makes em all in Ireland now, dont know.Ill buy a Case next time.

Bought my USA marked Buck 112, with stainless bolsters, nearly 14 years ago at Wal-Mart for something like $30 and carry it just about every day. It gets sharpened once in a blue moon because it's used more as a tool than a knife. By that I mean it's a gasket scraper, hole digger outer, hammer, etc etc. Usually it stays sharp enough close to the bottom of the blade to actually cut twine, etc with it. When it gets sharpened it usually takes awhile but I've got to admit it holds it's edge pretty good for the use it sees. Also love the old Old Timers. I've still got one of those that was given to me over 30 years ago that gets carried as my weekend pocket knife. It survived a two week bath in bilge water, when I was in the Navy, that discolored the blades but it still stays sharp when you get an edge on it.
