Iam wondering how mush corn,protien and bales of hay to finish out Holstin calves from weaning to market 1200-1400 lbs and how long Thankyou John

The skinnier they are the better the price you will get. I sell a lot of calves at the local auctions. Below 800 lbs you get the best price if your calves are nice an fat you will get the lowest price as the buyer has no way to make anything on them.

What kind and what quality hay do you have? If you have real good alfalfa you don"t need anything but corn to go with it, if you have grass hay at typical 7% protein then you will need a supplement. Good ballpark figure to gain a 1000 lbs. of beef = 3 tons of corn and 1/2 ton of soybean or cottonseed meal (41-44 5 protein) or eqivalent, hay free choice. The corn and supplement would be fed in varying ratios from weaning to finish. Check e-bay for a copy of Feeds and Feeding by Morrison, get a later edition such as revision 22. Should cost 10 bucks or less and well worth it.
