O/T This Is A Disgrace!!!!

This is the country Lutheran Church I grew up in. My great grandfather was a founder and a charter member in 1890. Because of financial considerations, the congregation merged with another in 1965 and built a new church in town. Services ceased in 1965 and this property was subsequently sold to a private party to use the parsonage as a residence.

The building is now sitting and rotting down. Nobody can do anything because it's private property and the owner refuses to do anything even though he's been contacted.

There oughta be a law!

I don't understand. Yes buildings are nice to keep and if you feel so disgusted then go offer the man enough to make him turn it over. Thats pretty simple. As for the importance of it being a church - the building does not make a church -the people make a church. But seriously if it was sold in 65 and has not been in use then your probably lucky it hasn't already been torn down. At least now you can still point at it and tell your kids about it but if its the condition of the building that really irritates you then offer to buy it, or fix it, or be happy with your memories.

That's a neat old church. Its a shame that many places just like this are falling apart, but there isn't a whole bunch you can do about it. Some people just don't care to see history fall apart. It's just like seeing a old tractor rusting away. You ask the owner if they want to sell and they will say,"No,I'm going to fix that up one day" Ten years later its still there half way in the ground.. I've given stuff away before so people can use or fix up. There is no sence letting stuff turn to crap if someone else can enjoy it or have a need for it.

You gotta let it go.

Something similar happened with the church in which I was baptized and to which my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents all belonged.

the pastor of the lutheran church i attend wanted to move and build new building a few years ago. our present building has been there since 1949, but is still very usable. we, the congregation, said NO. they just done some improvements. the church has been in the community since 1893 and we did not want to lose the heritage.

It"s all about the money. Years ago, the Methodist church wanted to combine our church with a city church, our church averaged 20 people a week. Our church is also on U.S. highway and a lurative $$$ location. Found out that IF our church ceased to exist, the property reverted to the family that donated it. The church is still in operation, with about the same attendance. The parsonage is rented out and helps to pay property tax, upkeep, and traveling pastor.

There is a law. In fact there's a whole slew of laws giving a person the right to let his own private property deteriorate. If you think "something should be done", by all means, purchase the property and "do something". Once a church building is sold, the church should have been desanctified, at which point it is no longer a church, but just another building.

I'm sure there are others in your town who feel the same. See if you can get enough people interested in buying the building and having it moved to another location. It doesn't cost much to have it moved. There has been a few buildings in our town that have been moved. stan

Too bad the majority of our citizens have no pride in our past. Everywhere I look it seems everything our fathers and their fathers stood for is slowly being allowed to rot away, be it ethics, freedom, history, buildings, faith, or even the right to not be politically correct.

We're pretty lucky. Our original church building was built in 1867 and they just kept adding on. Just finished the last one a year ago and we still use the original building for offices and classrooms. The church is on a county road 7 miles from the nearest town. There are some around here that are suffering the same fate as the one in the picture--SAD.

Yes, it's a disrace. It should either be kept up or torn down. Letting it rot is kind of like watching a loved one slowly wither away.Jim

do you really want a law thats decides how you can treat you personal property?

where do you draw the line.... a old church? old car or truck? How about you tractors?

"wherever two or three are gathered in My name, there I will be in the midst of them"

Never really saw the need for an extra building.....

I posted about a month ago about the local Methodist Church closing after 177 years.

We actually go to it's "sister" church, the old church was packed to overflowing at the deconsecration services. But it was spending 500 to 800 dollars out of it's savings to keep it open. Not handicap accessible, lots of other issues also. It's for sale.

But, good new for another old church building was that Western Illinois Threshers bought it, it is already on the house moving beams moved to across the road ready for it's final home at the show grounds. I assume they are just waiting for everything to dry up at the show grounds. DOUG

The Communists in Russia felt the same way. Now, they're gone and the churches are still there.

Therefore, I suppose you'd have to say that Communists are over rated.... just like Socialists and nnalert.

It is private property and the owner can do what he/she wants within zoning restrictions, etc...

That is what selling a property means.

Then again a primitive artist could have bought it. This is what happened to the small church I attended once. David...............

The rest of the story. A group of former members offered to dismantle the church and put up a building of the property owner's choice, within reason.

He turned them down.

A-Men Brother Dave, My thoughts exactly!!

Most Churches in my area are preying on the elders
to refinance or, turn their property over to the church at their passing,

These monies are then used to build a bigger better Church that the same congregation go to all the time, the only thing I see is in our small town, the attendance is still the same as the old time churches,-- just more empty seats.

And the preachers driving their "Lexus"

Give me a house to congregate with the fellowship of a few good men of Gods word and I call it a church.

It's all about $$$.
Most church people make a point of claiming they don't worship $$$, they say they don't have $$$ but $$$ is one of the things they talk most about.
