I have a IH 986 that is a good running tractor. The problem I have is that the hydralics are slow. I have to rev up the engine pretty high to get the tail gate up on the roll baler. The 3 point works a little faster but not much. Was wondering if i needed a new pump. Also is there a gasket or something where the lift arms attach to the tractor. If i put something heavy on like a disc mower it leaks bad around those areas. I lost all the oil from the hydralics after it sat with the mower on. Any help appreciated.

KISS formula. Start with a flow and pressure check- lots of pumps get replaced, only to not solve the problem. Oftentimes an internal leak in the system, while the pump is good. Sometimes they are audible- can hear the flow even though a valve is not being used. Excessive oil temp is another clue- pump running constantly due to an internal leak.

I would bet there are some teflon rings that need replaced under the lid to the transmission That will not hold if you try to reuse them. Sounds like that is what someone tried to get away with.
It could also be o-rings between the lines and the SCV's under the seat. The valves just stack up next to each other and there are o-rings between them too. Pull the seat then there are three bolts to get the valves off after removing the lines on top.

Just an idea:

Old style gear pump with open hydraulics?

In addition to the hitch, the draft lever will also control the speed of the remotes.

Oftentimes overlooked.
