Looking for opinions on buying a Massey Ferguson 265.
Found what appears to be a pretty good deal on a tractor that sounds like its in good shape. Selling because he doesnt need it anymore. Had some recent work done on pto clutch and has new tires on it last year. Has about 4000 hrs. I will be going to look at it in a day or two and would like to know if there is anything I should specifically pay close attention to or ask about. The price seems very reasonable and as yet he has not advertised it. Might be a great deal but am always wary. Thanks for any replies. Maybe the Massey lovers out there will give opinion on the particular model. Just going to use it for baling hay and general field maintenance.

thats a good tractor. the 265 was made from 1975-1983. It has 61 HP which should be enough to run a bailer. Its got the Perkins engine in it too which is a real good engine. Our MF 1080 has a perkins and it sounds great!

Gramps and Dad, and now Dad and I, have owned the same 265 since 1979. It's a solid utility tractor, we've used it for field work and light loader work with no major problems or mechanical issues. Couple of drawbacks are most only have a single hydraulic outlet and they're a little lightly built in our opinion. The engine block serves as the frame, and the front end is lightly built, we've broken both front spindles. It seems to lack low end grunt for being a 60HP tractor. However if the deal is right and it suits your needs, GO FOR IT!

I have a 265. It's my favorite tractor for all around general purpose use like pulling wagons, anything hay related mowing raking baling, it has spread manure, planted corn and beans, and run a corn picker. I don't use it for working ground since I have bigger better suited tractors for that but for small acreage limited use it would be just fine.

Well I went and looked at the tractor and it seems to be in very good shape. Runs well, smooth shifting and everything seems to work as it should. The only reservation I have is that the PTO seems to be rather loud. When the clutch pedal is pressed all the way down it is quiet but as soon as you let up a little and the PTO starts it makes a loud whiring noise alsmost like a throwout bearing that is bad. It was very noticable. Not being familiar with large tractors or MF I was wondering if this was normal? Owner stated he had a new PTO clutch installed sometime last year and he didnt seem to be put off by the sound. I really like it otherwise just not sure it should be a loud as is it. What ye say, is it normal?

thanks
