Custom hay rates?

Things are just now dry'n out here and I am so far behind that I am already thinking about what I am going to do differnt next year. There is no way with my night job that I am going to be able to get my corn planted, tobacco set, hay baled, and beans planted the next month. I am going to try to find some one to cut and bale my hay for me. What is going rate in your areas? I have about 25 acres, do most folks charge by the hour, acre, or bale? What would be a fair price?

Thank you much?

Dave

This year we are charging $15/acre for cut, ted, and rake and then round baling was $8-10 last year but this year it may be a little less. Last year I believe we charged $1.75 for small square from cut to baled and the customer took it to the barn.

Most "sharecropping" has traditionally been 1/3- 2/3- ie, landowner gets a third, farmer gets 2/3. So a reasonable way to approach it would be to pay him 1/2- 2/3 of the final value of the hay he puts up. I did some custom haying about 30 years ago, when the going price for hay was about $1.50 per bale in the field. I charged a dollar a bale, or if they only wanted me to do part of the operation, $.50 to bale, $.35 to cut, $.15 to rake. Seemed to come out about right.

All the arrangements, by the bale, acre, hour, and crop share can work. It just depends on the price agreement. You should be able to go to KY extension and find a bulletin updated annually on prices for custom work. I know Iowa State extension has such a bulletin, but prices here may not match prices or hay value in KY.

With road running and trash in the fields, I've not made out with custom hay work but some might.

As soon as I get a baler back together Im going to a 1/3-2/3 job where the landowner gets a third. He can buy what he wants of my share at 25.00 a roll for 4x4's. He's planning on ending up with 200 rolls out of the total and the whole thing should make around 300-350. Im getting 30.00-35.00 for hay here, but I'd have to move what he doesnt take and its worth 5.00 to me not to have to move it.

I have a NH 638 4X4 baler .I mow ,tedder, rake ,and bale for 1/2 the hay or I figure the hay value at $25.00 and charge $12.50 per roll

Around here in North Central Texas, they get 20 to 24 dollars per 4X5 round bale for cut, rake, bale, leave in your field. Most of them will also do it for 1/2 the hay. Tom

2/3 is what most people around here normally do. I would let some one do it on the thirds as long as they would sell me their 2/3 for going price.

I just did not know what most folks charged just to do it cash, not on the shares.

Thanks.

I just bought my hay for the coming year and paid 26 bucks for a 4x5 round bail including storage (pick up as needed) and don't lift a finger. Last year, we got some for free for harvesting and it cost about 10 a roll.

50/50 here in Wi. Or half of what it could sell for.

I check hay auctions to get a feel for prices.
