Tractor Key

I have a small 12HP lawn tractor. Recently when I"m done mowing I turn the key counter clock-wise and nothing happens. It will start with the key but will not shut down with the key. I have to pull the spark plug wire. Any suggestions? I"ve had this tractor for nearly 10 years and I would hate to part with it.

It could be the actual switch, or the "KILL" wire from the engine's magneto could have fallen off or broken. (ASSUMING it has mag ignition, as many engines that size do.)

What kind of engine is it?

Can you find a light-gauge wire coming from a terminal on the engine to the key switch?

Bob is correct. Simple wire or switch. Since you start it with the key, obviously it engages a solenoid for the starter, and since you used to shut it off with the same key, there must have been a kill wire as well since its a 12HP engine. Simple broken wire or the switch.

Don't part with it over that. Money's hard to come by these days, although buying a new one would help stimulate the... Nah, fix the wire or replace the switch and use it another 10 or so years and don't be over stimulating. Grin.

Good luck and enjoy your holiday weekend in much good health.

Had the same thing happen on a JD 111. Just a dirty connection on the back of the ignition/starter switch.
