Ford 545C question

I have the opportunity to purchase a nice ford 545c 4x4 (w/loader & scraper). The tractor has a shuttle shift transmission. Question, can I pull my 10' allis chalmers off-set disc with it on occasion without hurting the transmission? Need to occassionally disc around 8 acres of flat level ground a couple times a year. Any responses appreciated. Thanks

If you're talking about a 10' OFFSET that weights 2-4 ton and has 20+ inch blades... then no, you won't hurt the tractor pulling it with the wheels on the ground. That's the only way you will be pulling it, so I'd not worry about it beyond that.
You need 100 horse to move that disc properly. The 545 is in the 50-55 range.

Thank you for the reply Rod. I've never weighed the disc, but I would guess it is probably in the lower weight range that you quoted. I have a old ford 850 (only tractor I've got at the moment) - and I can pull it in first gear to a max depth of half way up the dics - albeit feathering the lift tires to keep from spinning the rear tractor tires. I was hoping that the 545 could pull it with more authority, however maybe I wouild be better off going with a larger ag tractor with more HP. Its just that I am dealing with a limited budget and want a versatile tractor - just like everybody else I suppose. Thanks again.

If you're pulling it with a Ford 850, we're thinking of a different disc...
Anything the 850 will do the 545 will do 10 times better...
I've got an 860, which for all intents and purposes is the same tractor and I wouldn't ask it to drag an offset that size up the road.
It'd throw the tractor in the ditch.

Agreed Ron. In order to disc properly and in a timely manner, you need the proper HP to do it, and I am sure it would take somewhere around 75hp to accomplish that with the disc I have. I only need to knock down the weeds on occassion, and its quite a chore for my trusty old 850. Anything faster than what I have is an improvement for me. I just didn't know much about the 545c shuttle shift transmission with the electric clutch and if it could handle a sustained load/pull. Sure appreciate your time answering.

It's an industrial machine so I wouldn't worry about the torque. Just keep everythign clean, the filters changed and the oil full. It was made to slog around all day as a loader, so should be OK for what you want, but that will still be a good pull for it.

Thanks Rod. The gentleman I am looking to purchase it from is letting me try it out this weekend, so I should be able to tell how it will perform. With construction down, good deals are to be had on equipment like this. (3K hours on it, clean too for only 5K). Farmers in my area (Central CA) are holding on to their good stuff, so finding a decent ag tractor in my price range is tough. Thanks for your input, I appreciate it!
