Ugh, gotta put a horse down--update

Thanks all for your kind words. I put the horse down and buried it yesterday. Some pretty tough moments when he came back from the vet monday night. By yesterday morning the horse had really went down hill.

The kids spent alittle time with him yesterday morning before school, my oldest called me at work to give me the go ahead(it was gonna happen anyway). He figured there was no sense in letting the horse suffer just so he could keep looking at him in the pen. Glad I didn"t put him down right away like I was gonna, it was nice to give all three kids the time to see what needed to be done.

Now the other bad part is I have to find another horse to match the kid..

On the brighter side I got my 4430 back from repair, and it was cheaper than I was planning on.

I have one I want to move, I'd give him to you and deliver him, but I'm not sure he'd make a kid's horse. How good a rider is your son?

Thanks for the thought and all your kind words, Nancy.

He's a pretty darn good rider on a horse he knows, not big on the unknown though.

I really appreciate the offer on the horse, the only problem is that there is way too many horses between MN and Texas.

I put some feelers out there yesterday, and we're gonna sit back alittle and see what comes up.

Thanks again to both you and James BW

Offer still stands. Keep me posted. The horse's main problem is I don't ride him much. He's a quarter/arab cross and he got the best of both. Good Quarter bone and the flat muscling of the Arab. Good size, smooth gait and drop dead gorgeous to look at. My horse shoer keeps telling me he should be working cattle.

He's a half brother to the one I ride and I would be pleased to know he went to a good home.

It may not really apply to a horse, but when I had too have the vet put a beloved family dog down, they sent a sympathy card with a poem called "rainbow bridge". It was found to be comforting to all of us. Look for it on line.

As per a request I will post an answer to you. I have not looked at your post till now and will not look back more. BTDT and yes it hurts big time and even now it hurts me to post to this. Look in my web site again as per asked by some one else and read/listen to what id there. I my self have buried a good many over the years and know I will be doing so again probably not long from now and when I do this one that will died will really hurt me. My horse is a pure breed Arabian that is 23 or so years old and when she dies it will brake my heart. As did the pony that I use part of her name as my handle

We had to put a couple down ourselves. There's no easy way, just have to remember that it's best for the horse.
When it comes to replacing, you might consider a little Quarter Horse. The foundation bred ones are usually around 14-14.5 hands and tuff/smart enough to handle anything you want them to do. Our experience is that they are cool headed and don't have a mean bone in them and trainable to the point that they seem like they teach themselves. Seems like a good time to buy now also. Pick him out a nice 2 yr old and let him train it himself.

Good Luck,

Dave

Thank you Rich,
I choke up every time I read that "Horses Prayer"

I Just hope the original poster has his children read it.

Or anyone that may have to put one down to better understand whats right.
