Hello all:

I tried to give 3 cows a lepto shot today and wasn't too successful. Is there any treatment i can put in their water or feed them rather than an injection?

Thanks

haha, no head chute. just tried to feed them and give them a shot, they werent too happy with me. any other time i could pet them, but they want to run wild when I have a syrenge.

do about a 100 hd every 6 mo. we crowd em in the load chute i don"t think there is any oral nnalert for lepto

Yeah , You really need a head gate ,, They should be under roof TOO , so you can keep them well oiled and quick to operate ,,They certainly come in handy ,, on a lighter side ,, My son and I used to sit on the barn roof and in the hay loft above the cows and Used a soap Squirt bottle to apply Ivomec pour on ,, Got it done ,, God only knows how well....

Don't know the name of the company or even how to search for it but there is an add in the back of one of the magazines I get that might be what you need if a head gate is not an option. Theres this out fit that sells syrenges on about a 6' stick. You can walk by and hit'm and don't have to get too close. The same add also shows an bow and arrow set up for a little wilder critters that is good out to like 20'. If I have a chance in the morning I will try to look for the add.

You might want to check around some and see if you can rent a head gate close to home. Our county extension office has one.

Good luck.

Talked with a farmer who got lepto while castrating a bull calf.He was very sick, spent 2 weeks in the hospital.Pigs can be carriers.

You can make a simple head gate out of wood and 2 inch round pipe and build a shoot. OUt in the field we have roped them and tied them to a pick up bumper and stuck them in the rump but it isn"t easy to do. The cattle needles are pretty thick.

Can't imagine anyone owning cattle without a way to catch/confine them. In the early '50s, when we only had 12 or 15 head, we used a simple pipe 'headcatch' with a sliding/notched handle to catch/hold 'em.....bolted on the end of a chute. A couple hours work and a few dollars worth of scrap pipe and you're in business.
