Just messing around.

I like old tractors and I like old songs; dusted the cobwebs off of another old country tune.

Just love takin' those old dog-howling two-steps and breathin' a little "fire" in 'em. :>)

That's the neat thing about those old songs.

That one will work for "Honky Tonk Angels", "Wildside of Life" and if ya move one note over a notch the darned thing will work for "Fraulein". :>)

I'm gonna try to get back over there one of these days.

I just started going to the one they have in Alliance and we sure have a heck of a lot of fun for a few hours.

Haven't been to that one up in Crawford in about 10 years or so.

Used to have about 300 of the silly things lying about around here. Darned neighbors kept takin' 'em.

Rumor was that they would also double fer rat poison. :>)

One of these days, I'll get busy and build another.

Thanks Allan, Sounds great, that also works for The Great Speckled Bird.....which is same as Honky Tonk Angles

Banjo Update,,,,, Okay we have chatted about this before, Im now around 2 years into beginning banjo AND IT GETS SO FRUSTRATING. I was dumb to wait until age 60 to ever start this lol. Anywho I can now keep good time,,,,,,roll through the chords for about any key called out at a jam good enough for back up,,,,,,,play a lil decent banjo lead in G or C for several songs (Cripple Creek, Jed Clampitt, Foggy Mountain,,Rollin in Babys Arms,,Will the Circle be Unbroken,,Grandfathers Clock etc etc you get the picture) ........BUT Im still pretty much on top playing the straight barefoot chords versus playin up n down the neck like a real banjo player. I play the Scruggs 5 string finger pickin roll style

BUT I have friends that played like 30 years and thats what gets frustratign cuz I wont live long enough to ever be a real banjo picker n go up n down the neck n be able to play any song after hearing another play the first verse grrrrrrrrrrrr like my buddies can do so easy even if they never heard the song before

Sometimes I wanna just quit grrrrrrrrrrr

Very good Alan. I left all my music talent to my brother and sisters. That is why I ended up being an electrician and not a musician.

Hi John,

I know exactly what you are talking about because I got "stuck" at that juncture also. Took me forever to figure it out.

The way to break out of that box is to get out of the octive.

Run your scales across three octives and always play your lead lines across multiple octives.

This forces you to play horizontially vs vertically and gives the voice more variation also.

Try it; you'll be surprised at how fast it comes. Just a day or two and one song played this way will lead to another before ya know it.

THEN, after you've crossed that boundry, start playing off the thirds and fifths. The listener "thinks" he's hearing the same thing in his mind even tho he's not, but it really makes it easy to just "grab" any note and run with it (in either direction) because it multiplies the scale by 3.

Thanks Allan, I hear and believe ya and have tried it on a few songs. It sure adds to the variety and improves the song by alternating a verse from up top to down the neck an octave or 2 higher BUTTTTTTTTT LOL it takes more work n practice and I guess I tend to get lazyyyyyyyy cuz its easy for me up top.....BUT NO PAIN NO GAIN if I wanna improve I just gotta work at it

Thanks for the advice, farmers, like musicians sure are great to help a guy out n thats why I enjoy helping here whenever I can

You hit the nail square on the head.

Singing or playing an instrument is no different than learning to talk. Anyone can do it, just depends how much time a feller works at it. :>)

Allan

If my knuckles fumbled like yours, I'd be in Nashville.!

I enjoy all your playing, Just to let you know Your website wont accept my emails.

Amen to the electrician business!! Can't even play a record player, let alone a DVD, MP3, or anything else, but I love the Wildside of Life.

Thanks Hugh,

Yeah, I know. For lack of a better word, I call those short takes "teasers".

I'll record a short version of a tune to play back to myself, just to check my own phrasing.

Since my mind is always rolling the song 2, 3 or even 4 measures ahead of my fingers, I will oftentimes hear/play things differently than what is actually coming across on playback. (Hope that makes sense). :>(

Anyhoo, I'll listen, make a mental note, cinch 'em up and tighten 'em down so they are right the next time I play the tune.

Thanks again,

Allan

Good Pickin' Allan....A little of the Wild Side of Life...Key of E or 4 sharps....Nice Hank Thompson kind of lick for an endin'...Had to plug My old Tele in My Blackface Deluxe, hook up My Eckoplex and run thru it with You a few times

Is that why I still can't talk?
45 years playing my old Martins and I still ain't any good at it

Oh heck,

And, that's another thing. No one EVER gets to the point where they are happy with their playing.

It's what keeps pushing us forward. :>)

I've got an old Gateway laptop that is about a million years old.

I fumbled around and made up some adaptors so I could plug into the little "mic" input jack.

Allan

John T. I just got a old Fender Starcaster. Havnt tried to play anything for about the last 30 years. If I lived closer to Alan I would have him give me some lessons.
