I remember an old saying,concerning growing cotton.It goes like this(first white then red three days then dead) Know what it means ? How many of you know what a cotton gin does to cotton?? Why is a Texas flower,the bluebonnet,called that? It is blue but why bonnet.And it,s not always blue.and the english word for hood is bonnet and word for trunk is boot.Know what their word dip switch means,also paraffin,means what? How about saloon?Also the term Wing in auto usage?
 
I would say that the saying refers to the flower. It starts out white then when it's fertilized it turns pinkish red, then dies off. This takes about 2 to 3 days. The cotton boll is the developed overy of the flower. A cotton gin pulls the lint from the seed. The word gin is short for engine. In acient times any mechanical device was called an engine. Can't help you with blue bonnet or wing.

To clear up some of the auto terms used by Brits
dip switch- headlight dimmer
paraffin- lubricant, not sure if liquid oil, or grease
wing- fender
saloon- 4 door sedan

You left out the cotton gin separates the seed from lint after they are extracted from boll and then packs lint in a approximately 500# bale held by woven cover and metal bands. In my youth I did really hate hoeing and picking cotton.
 
I remember the Lennon Sisters singing, "when those cotton 'balls' get rotten, you can't pick very much cotton" on the Lawrence Welk show; pretty sure they'd never picked much cotton.
 
The British say a Lucas switch has three positions--dim, flicker, and off.
