Wednesday my brother went to the farm and put nitrogen on the corn I stayed on the job. He says it looks like we can pick the oats in a week or so. Last year we put the whole crop of oats in our largest demolition trailer and took it the mill. Unloaded and they handed my brother a check and we walked outside he looks at the check then shows me and its almost twice what we are expecting. Well we turn around and take the check back and tell the lady there has been a mistake so she takes check and ticket into her office. She comes back two minutes later hands us back the check and says there has been no mistake. So I politely ask to speak to the owner he shows up I explain there has been a mistake he takes check and ticket gets on adding machine in front of us runs the numbers says there has been no mistake the check is right and hands it back. On the way home we stopped by our parents house and I get a pair of glasses and look at the weight ticket and there is the mistake the wrong empty weight. I get on the phone ask for the lady that writes the checks tell her that I found the mistake. The whole time she is getting more and more irritated with me for trying to prove her wrong, so she says bring it back with a correct empty weight ticket and they will cut us another check. I did but you would have thought I was the biggest idiot in the world for wanting to get it straightened out. Maybe I am but that is just the way I was raised. Yall have a nice day.

you did good, somebody would have found the mistake eventualy the weighmaster is supposed to be watchinf for that, we get the same problem with computer controled scales in the gravel business, it will sometimes show the entire weight of the rig as net weight in other words according to it, the truck weighs nothing and all the weight is cargo , since in our business we know what a semi should weigh empty as well as a ten wheeler, any other weight other than a gross of around 50,000 on a ten wheeler or 80,000 on a semi bears closer inspection of the weight ticket

i worded that wrong it should have said anything other than 15 tons net on a ten wheeler or 24 tons net on a semi will bear closer inspection of the weight ticket

I get such things happen from time to time. I have taken to questioning them three times. If they get insistant and beligerant that they are right and I am wrong I just leave it at that and keep the difference. Now if its wrong in THEIR favor and I am right that is a whole nother matter!
You did good in what you did!

Our philosophy is if you keep what isn't rightfully yours, its stealing. When we get incorrect change, etc. we always bring it to the attention of the clerk.

One coop has 2 dump pits and scales all run by camera & from the office up above, you do your own unloading & traffic lights tell you when to go or stop. Pick up a scale ticket from the office that is spit out by a printer, never even see anyone.

Anyhow, one time I looked at the ticket & I had about double what my wagons could hold. Looked the ticket over, & my empty weight was zero lbs.

The fella had me drive around & reweigh, obviously that was wrong. He couldn't figure out what happened; I didn't have time to explain he weighed the empty scale next to me, I saw the red/green lights flash on it as I was waiting for my scale lights to go. Somehow he got the full weight from one scale & the empty weight from the other scale on the same ticket - not sure how he did that part!

You and your brother did the right thing.

The "mistake" would have been eventually discovered by the bookkeeper/accountant at the mill.

Y'all probably saved one of the mill's employees either money out of their pocket or maybe even their job.
