OK,Wild plum trees have this crap on the small branches.Very hard bark-like substance, that is killing the tree.

Cracked a few of them open and seen a tiny spider-like bug ra away. What is it and how do I rid of it? SE MN area.

Waiting for the fields to dry out AGAIN so can finish with the soybeans,so had a chance to do some things at home and got to looking at the trees.

Thanks!

take it to your local extension agent at your county seat. He should know what it is or know someone who does, and know the treatment.

Vern nailed it. It is bacterial and if it is a tree you want to save you have to cut all the nodules of this stuff out..pretty much butcher the tree. There are then sprays that will keep the tree from developing new Black knot, mosty sulphur based sprays..it is very common in fruit trees of that specie. Not impossible to save the tree but black knot will spread to other similair trees very quickly so act now or have a brush pile burn later

All of our cherry trees get it, the wild plums not usually a problem. If you touch it with your hands don't get it on the open wound of a tree or it will start again.

Thanks for the link Vern.

I have these on a decorative tree in my yard and my wife has been after me to cut it down. Sounds like she may be right.
