O/T: Antivirus software recommendations?

Our Norton Internet Security is getting ready to expire. I don't know if I am going to renew it. Are there other products available that do the job just as well or better while using less of the computer's resources?

Thanks for your advice.

Christopher

I used freeware AVG for quite a number of years and finally went to a paid version as it had some added benefit. In my opinion it is one of the best, HOWEVER an update gave me problems and rendered it unusable at all and AVG would not answer any emails for obtaining support. I finally uninstalled it as I felt my computer needed protection.

I now use Avast which many recommend. It is a freeware version that I use. No problems thus far.

If it weren't for support issues with a paid version I would still be using AVG. I cannot recommend their product because of that.

My step son, who is somewhat of a computer geek, says that the AVG for $30? per year is more than good enough. I used the AVG free edition for a couple of years, and you can still get the free edition, but it seems to malfunction at times and really doesn't provide the protection that is needed today.

I just got a brand new Dell desktop, it came with a trial version of McAfee, when it expires, I will download the AVG. I've been told the McAfee is somewhat of a resource hog also, although I have not noticed it yet.

Hi Chris,

Yeah, I know. 99% of the time, I think on the other side of the river. :>(

However, never could figure out why anyone in his right mind would broadcast to the globe what kind of secutiry measures he uses.

Just doesn't make any sense to me. :>)

any product you choose is only going to be as good as the company it keeps.
I have used avast for over ten years.it is light and acts well with other programs, fast, not a resource hog.monitors the email, downloads. always ranks in the top 3.plus it is free.

Every computer geek I have talked to says Norton is worthless. I have had problems with AVG bogging down my older computer - its about 5 or six years old now, but seems to run fine on the newer one.

What Nancy said was true through Norton 2008, the old Norton was a hog. They sent an offer giving me a free 30 day trial of the all new Norton internet security, claiming it was all new and fixed all the things that made users hate the old Norton, saying it uses very little computer and is constantly working in the back ground and goes away the instant you do anything on the computer.

It works ! I am very happy with Norton Internet Security 2009. Computer is faster, it updates viris difinitions every few minutes (If you check, it usually says viris difinitions have been updated within the last 10 minutes).
If you let the computer sit idle for a few minutes, a box pops up on the screen saying that Norton 2009 is updating, repairing checking.
Move the mouse or touch a key and Norton 2009 goes dormant and gives you full use of your computer.
I love how the new Norton works and nothing has got past it in the 6 months I have had it.

Trend Micro is a PIA when you have VISTA. To many conflicts bog it down at start up and it locks the computer up.

I am using Norton Antivirus 2009 and it is doing a good job and hasn't slowed my computer any. I never did like Norton Internet Security. If you want to try a free one try Avast or AVG. Which ever one you use you will need to uninstall the Norton Internet Security first.
