john deere walk behind engine swap

Not exactly an old tractor question but my neighbor gave me his 1997 54 in walk behind w/ a blown motor (seized). No one seems to want to rebuild it. Do any of you have a engine that would fit that you would like to sell? The original engine is a 17 hp kawasaki E/no fc54dva59811 family id
ska535u(or possibly v)192ra.Also on ebay there are two different used kawasakis, I am willing to adjust bolt patterns, and what not but could you make either one work?

Thanks so much

Either one of those engines will work fine for what you want to do. The engine number you gave for yours must be missing a number, I believe the engine you have is a fc541. I do landscaping for a living and use exmark mowers with this same basic engine you have, I have 3 mowers with the fh 541 v. In my opinion a 17 horse engine is kind of underpowered in a 54 inch cut mower. My 52" exmark uses the 19 horse Kaw. Note tho that the only difference in the 17 and 19 horse engine is the carburetor, they use the same piston, rings and headgasket.
With the first engine you have listed, the 17 horse, you would need to verify what crank it has, they can come with 2 different size crank ends, as well as a tapered end. The 22 horse lists the crank as 1" so you would need to measure your crank and do some checking to make sure your drive pulleys will fit the crank of a new motor. Does your Deere come equiped with electric start? This will matter if it isn't equipped because both of these motors shown have electric, and you would have to change it to a recoil if your mower was hand start. The 22 horse would be more power than you would need but it will work fine. They all have the same attachment bolt pattern, just a bolt in each corner to hold it down.

THanks so much for the help. so do i need to check the crank on the 22 horse or both before i buy, even if i do buy and it has a diff crank could i pick up a different pulley to remedy that?

I would ask the seller if it is a 1 inch shaft with a keyway and tapped whole on the end. You would be much better to get an engine that will work without having to change drive pulleys. Just ask some questions so make sure the cranks will be a match for your current engine.
