Trees and corn yeild?

I know that trees pull water and fertilizer from a good ways out, but how far out will the shade/water pulling of trees hurt corn and bean yeilds?

I am thinking about putting filter strips around some of the creeks and was just wandering how far out would be the optimum distance, don't want to give up more ground than I need to but want to go out far eoungh that the trees are not huring corn and beans.

Thank you much.

I've always been told that any place a tree shades it has roots out that far. Old wives tale or not you sure can see that it appears to be true.

If you have large, mature trees, the crops will be worse right next to it for 20 feet, but for a LONG distance, the crops will be MUCH better with some protection from the wind.

Our state forester established our tree planting crp along a creek bank with at least 2 rows of shrubs between the larger trees and thje field border. This minimalizes the effects on the crop and future hassle of trimming back trees. In the heavily wooded area of the State park that we farm I find that we lose about 6-8 rows when planting on the north side and 4-6 when planting on the south side of the tree line.

Especially in really dry years it seems to be worse, but at least the first 12 rows near a tree line.If its too bad Id rent a ripper and break some roots

Never thought of this, most all the fields around here have old trees/hedgerows, but it seems we get enough rain to keep both happy, critters nail a lot of grain off those outside rows in some places, and after just recently clearing the perimeters of some fields you can see where they used to be, trees/brush seem to encroach a fair distance given some time, reducing crop space cumulatively.

About as far out from trunk of tree as the tree is tall. Some trees have more horizontal roots than others.
