Dumb ??? for Removel of Automatic Tranny

I never really messed around with cars much,but I did remove a automatic tranny years ago but can not remeber If you leave the torque converter attached to the flywheel and pull away just the tranny(leaving converter on the flywheel) or do you turn the flywheel around,remove the bolts from the Torque convertor and pull away the tranny with the converter still on the input shaft? Or does it matter? How about when your putting it back together? Thanks for any help. I think old age is getting to me!!
 
Converter stays with the transmission always. During removal it prevents an oil gusher and during installation the converter impeller hub drive lugs must be engaged in the pump to facilitate installation.
 
Converter stays with the trans when removing or installing trans. If you have room, cobble up a little steel flat bracket to bolt on the bell housing and firmly hold the converter in the pump. The bracket holds the converter in mesh with the pump drive. Saves having the converter sliding off while moving the trans and possible converter or pump damage if the converter slides out of mesh with the pump drive tangs during installation.
 
Depends what kind of car.Most it stays on the trans but some it has studs that go from the converter to nuts that are behind the crank flange, but this is early technology.On a Chevy when you fill the trans it will go into the converter too so dont worry that you forgot to fill the converter.Putting it back isnt bad just put it on and then install trans bolts.
 
I work in a transmission shop and can say with authority that you leave the converter in the trans and un-bolt it from the flywheel. Put it back in the same way. Make sure the converter stays fully seated into the trans as you put it back in, otherwise you're asking for problems.
