Ford 550 axle removal

I have a ford 550 bachoe and right axle is locked up and will not move i am removing the hoe. My question is can i remove the right side axle housing without removing the whole rear end. my left side wheel moves fine when i lock up the right side brake.

I'm not so familiar with backhoes, but you should eb able to remvoe the axle housing just fine so long as you can lift it clear. I would tend to think that the crown wheel will fall out the left side on that model.... or at least it would on that size tractor, but that may be at the point where the hoes used a different rear axle... and it may be that the diff will exit on the right.

It sounds as though you have a brake problem. I wonder if you gave the brake rod a whack inwards... mabey it would release. I find it hard to believe that the axle itself would just lock up and leave the other side free.

I took the wheel off and it does not look as though the axle housing will make it past the frame. i was also told that the ford 4500 tractor is the same as the ford 550 backhoe, is this correct?

I did some looking in the parts book... and the axle housings appear to be the standard 3 cylinder AG tractor, so generally they are the same as the 4500... just a newer variant.

I don't know if you can get the housing off past the frame othe than to say you need to pull the housing straight out 4-6" before the sunshaft will clear the housing sufficiently.
The differential should be on the left in that housing so that is one less complication...
