Grass seed cover crop

I am seeding about an acre and a half in grass seed behind the sheds to make a nice place for the kids to play in. We're already behind on our moisture here in MN and there isn't much rain in the 10 day forecast. Should I/Could I lay the grass seed down and then throw some oats on top of it for a cover crop and moisture retention? I've never used oats before.

Thanks

You shouldn't need a cover crop for lawn grass. Oats for a cover crop are used more for things that establish slowly like legumes.

When seeding lawn I recommend using a garden rake, or some type or drag harrow if it's a big spot, to get the seed incorporated into the soil. Then pack it down either by driving over it back in forth with a vehicle or pull some type of roller. This has produced the best results for me. When I've tried just broadcasting it and leaving it, the birds seem to eat most of the seed.
