Farmall 504..........

Our local Case IH dealer has on the lot a Farmall 504 diesel. I stopped to look at it Sunday afternoon when they weren't open, and found it to have a 4 cylinder diesel engine. There was a long extension between the water pump and the fan blades to get the fan in the proper position behind the radiator. Does this sound right? I expected it to be a six cylinder, but maybe the "4" in "504" designates a 4 cylinder. The badging says "Diesel".

It looks tough, paint is almost non-existent. And they're asking $4600, which is about twice what it's worth.

i DON,T KNOW WHAT YOU WERE EXPECTING BUT THAT IS THE ENGINE THAT WAS IN THE TRACTOR FROM THE FACTOR. SOLD A LOT OF THEM FIRT THING THAT IH HAD THE 3 POINT ON AFTER THE 2 POINT THINGS..
NOT A BAD TRACTOR AND IF YOU LOOK AT WHAT PEOPLE ARE ASKING FOR M FARMALS ON THE SITE IT IS NOT PRICED TOO HIGH HOWEVER I TEND TO AGREE IT IS
2000 HIGHER THAN I COULD GET HERE ON THE RETAIL LOT. 30 YR OLD TRACTORS JUST DON,T GET SOLD

I had a 504 GAS tractor. That too had the same long extension that you are talking about. I do beleive thats the way it came from factory. Don't know about the diesil but my gaser really sucked the gas and an M would out do it. It is ok for easy work like raking hay or something like that. Was easier to operate with power steering, TA, and live PTO.

Four of the same cylinders as in the 560. 2/3 of the famous 282 Diesel. I've got a tractor 25 years newer (modern diesel, 3-pt, ps, etc) that won't sell at $4600 ! This economy is tough.

i bought a 504 gas last week at a consignment auction. it sold for $2200. nice paint, decent tires, 3pt, no ta or ps, runs good. diesel 504s were a lot scarcer than gas 504s, but i'd agree the one you were looking at was overpriced. the long space between the fan and water pump was standard. a neighbor had one when they were new, and the water pump was a recurring problem, probably due to the leverage caused by the extra distance to the fan.
