Hey folks,
flying into JFK Wednseday, picking up a rental car and heading to SE OH. What is the nicest route to take as far as landmarks and scenery? Not in a big hurry. I'll be going back to MD on rt 50 so will have my dose of WV  . Been 20 years since I've been to the States and wasn't on a schedule so would like to spend some time looking for arrowheads. Any historic laws against that these days? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dave

You will find Rt. 50 a pleasant change; its 4 lane from Parkersburg to Clarksburg. Easier is to come I-48 to Morgantown, I-79 to clarksburg, 50 to p-burg where it now crosses the Ohio river on a bridge based on Blennerhasset Island & ties in with rt. 50 in Ohio. For more scenery swing further south to Virginia & take US 33 thru the mountains, also 4 lane now.

Welcome home Dave, I did not know it was 20 years. If you rent a car get a car with a GPS and program it for your final destination and then when you take some side roads it will always just recalculate your route, that way you don't have to worry about staying on a route. Alot of good farming going on right now.

Route 6 across the top of PA is a very scenic route through the PA grand canyon, and through some beautiful woodland. Or, if youuu are wanting to see farmland and such take rte 322 through the middle of the state, or rte 30 aross the bottom of the state. Enjoy!

Been even longer since I didn't have anyone tagging along. Wife bought me a RT flight for Xmas and the rental car for my Bday (tomorrow) and will stay home and take care of te animals. My priority is to see Mom (been 12 years) and my 2 Brothers. Then just bum around a few days visiting some folks around where I grew up, jump in the river at the favorite spot (if it's still there) and try to find a few arrowheads (ex wife, who I pray that I don't bump into, gave away all I had and all my guns when I came over here and she wasn't able to keep her pants on)
Don't care so much for farmland as I do woods and hills. The Northern PA route sounds good, just got to figure a Southern rt (KY, VA, WV ?) back across to MD.

Thanks, Dave

Well if you are going across the top of Pa. and then on down to south east Ohio then you will pass by me nodoubt or not to far from me .Ya might want to stop by.

Dave 2 depending on what type of driving you are use to you might want to take a cab or train out of JFK to newark airport and then get your rental car. Getting on rt 78 west from there is not bad.It may make your trip much more enjoyable. If you drive from JFK out your self after your 5th close call with whack jobs and nan speaking english Americans running 18 wheelers in to port Newark . You may take up drinking and really foul language.

The idea to not be driving out of JFK makes a lot of sense to me. Have had to make that trek twice in my lifetime and can't think of any reason to inflict that pain again. Even 13 years ago it was bad, the more recent trip was exactly as described below except 20 times worse. Besides cab or train you could also look at picking up a small commuter flight out to a regional airport. I see promotional rates as low as $50 round trip sometimes out of Harrisburg or Lancaster PA. Not sure any flights to JFK from those airports, but others along the way might work as well.

If you end up going past Gettysburg, PA stop by to see the horses and I will buy the coffee.

Have a Good B-day.

Not sure, but I think the rental car is at the terminal. If not, a shuttle is included in the rental. There are some wild drivers here too, just gotta take it as it comes I guess.

If you really want to go south you could pick up the AA highway in NE Kentucky and take it accross to either US 68 or US 127 then go back accross the southern tier of KY and Virginia, and back up the WV turnpike.

My girls do the hunter/jumper stuff so our acreage is all hobby stuff. Have 5 in the barn (2 ponies that have long been out grown, a quarter horse, and a branded Oldenburg as well as retired thoroughbred). Neighbors I can see from my house include an arabian breeder/trainer who has sold horses to actual Arabs, a thoroughbred breeder, and a retired standardbred (trotter/pacer) breeder. Standardbreds are big around here mostly due to our proximity to Hanover Shoe Farms which is the world's largest standardbred breeder (see link). That's what got my girls interested. We used to think it was free entertainment to buy a bag of carrots and go to the shoe farms. Can just walk into the barns and give the stallions treats and this time of year it is almost guaranteed that the foaling barn will have foals/moms around. Turms out it was definately not FREE though.

I have only been to Ohio and PA one time, I was 17, in van full of 4-H'ers and was not looking at road signs on the way to Niagra Falls so I am no help on directions.

About the arrow heads, in KY you are good as long as you have landowner's ok and you leave the shovel at home. Don't tresspass or dig. If you can be there and it's ontop of the ground it's fair for the take'n.

Good luck and hope you have fun.

Newark International is really the best place to fly in/out of the NYC metro area. JFK, you have 3 routes, the Van Wyck Expressway, to 95, you will see the new Mets stadium if you go that way, but the darned traffic in that area can be the worst around. The other way out is the Belt parkway to the Verrazano Bridge, or into Manhattan via the Battery Tunnel. From the Belt you'll see the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, also Brighton Beach, Bensonhurst, then Bay Ridge, headed towards the bridge, then you have to cross the Staten Island expressway to get to 95 or the NJ turnpike. If you go to the Battery tunnel you will end up in lower Manhattan, right past the WTC site, and up the west side to either the Holland or Lincoln Tunnel, go all the way up, you will cross the G.W. Bridge, to 95. The last option is to take the streets, to one of the bridges to get across the East river, your choices are one of the main avenues like Flatbush Ave, or Ocean Parkway, head into downtown Brooklyn, to get to the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, or further north the Williamsburg or 59th st Bridge. If taking the streets, just look at the map and head west, Flatbush ave and others are not in bad neighborhoods, more of a scenic route. You do want to stay on a main avenue, don't stop to ask questions, downtown Brooklyn and surrounding areas are ok, late at night, I do not recommend taking the streets.

Times to travel, if you can be in that rental car mid morning-mid day, traffic will be less, but both the Belt and the Van Wyck can be jammed anytime, so can 95 (Cross Bronx Expressway) you must listen to 1010 wins radio on A.M. for traffic reports.

If you don't want to see NYC, Brooklyn, Queens or Manhattan, the latter being the most desirable, see if you can get a flight into Newark International, and you will avoid traffic problems, anything east of the East River like JFK, LaGuardia, and Long Island can be a real hassle with traffic, the NJ turnpike usually flows well, even in early morning and early afternoon rush hour traffic.

If you head up the Van Wyck, you can also head north via the Whitestone bridge, Hutchinson parkway, to I-684, to I-84, take the latter (I-84) west, eventually over the NYS thruway (I-87), to northern PA, scenic route that way.

I worked in the metro NYC area for 15 years, I know the area like the back of my hand, trust me, whenever possible travel off hours and against traffic, all of which either heads into Manhattan or out of Manhattan, depends on what time of day it is. Saturday and Sunday - early mornings are probably the best time with the least traffic.

My BIL works at that shoe farm, been there a couple times Dave would like the tour. If He comes show him the largest Barn in Pa also although it is now a teddy bear store. also a drive past Pres. Eisenhower's Quaint little home with the still standing guard posts, although not manned at the time I was there.

Maybe Mr. Wolf has his Ford collection out also from the miniature Cub/ 8 N to the Ford V8 flat heads.

I would guess if you are coming into MD on RT 50 you are going RT 301 to 95 back to JFK. If you do give me a shout I,m not far from 95 or 301 and you can take a look at our horses.

(quoted from post at 18:55:53 05/04/09) Dave,
Where are you headed to in MD?
Pete

Visit an old friend and his family in Aberdeen and if we can still stand each other, he said something about a hot rod show at Ocean City. His M&D are in OH close to where I'm going so we may hook up there. If so, I'll skip MD altogether. Pretty flexible after I see Mom.
Thanks for the replies, I've got a list and will see where I end up.

For my own info.,when did they make 33 four lane from Elkins to Harrisonburg?I was thru there in 07 and only a strip east of Elkins was 4 lane(Bowden-Elkins).I didn't see any construction then so I'am curius as it would save some miles as going to Bluefield and coming back North.

Best bet: Take I-78 west to Harrisburg, Pa. From there, you can tour the Amish farm country, and lots of other stuff to see, especially the Railroad museum at Strasburg, Pa.
From Harrisburg, you can either take the Pa. Turnpike west to upper Ohio, north of Pittsburgh downtown about 25 miles or so. Or, take the scenic route, Rt. 22 West to Pittsburgh, and on into Ohio.
On return trip, from Parkersburgh, W.Va. take Rte 50 East to Winchester, to Rte 81/78East. Or, go to 15 north to Gettysburg, Pa., to rte 30 East, to York, Lancaster, Reading, in Pa., to Allentown/Rte 78 East to NY, NJ.
Lots to see. visit the Harley Davidson factory in York, Pa. South Pennsylvania has lots to see there, too.
Enjoy the trip! I've been all over the area, and there's lots to see!
