OT: Any Experience With Lisinopril?

Went to the doc yesterday, and he started me on a blood pressure medication called Lisinopril [20 mg], a generic version of Zestril or Prinivil, according to the info I've found on the internet.

This is the first time I've been on ANY long-term med, and I'd like to hear what others on the same med have experienced. So far, it seems that I have to empty my bladder a lot more...both in frequency and amount. Other than that, I haven't noticed many other effects.

If you take this med, I'd like to hear about what your experience is. Thanks in advance.

I've been taking it for probably 10 years. Still alive and more or less kicking. Never noticed any side effects.

A relative takes it . It can have a side effect of giving you a dry cough. Its pretty common , and the Dr. will know what to do about it

Hi, I've been on it for 6 years now. I've had to have my doctor give me a prescription for some strong cough medicine. Many people notice that they get a dry cough. My daughter and sister both experienced it also.
Good Luck..... Jim

I have taken it for several years. Yeah, you might pee a little more, and I use a sugar free cough drops to stop the cough. Seems to work ok, bp under control.

If you're losing water, you may be taking a combination that includes lisinopril and a diuretic. Lisinopril doesnt' do that on its own. Key word to look for in the description is the "something-something-thiazide" phrase.

Be sure to call your doc right away if you start getting cramps from the diuretic.

Lisinopril is good stuff; it's an ACE inhibitor. It has the fewest and most benign side effect of the meds in its class. I've taken nearly all of them over the years.

You may have to add a calcium channel blocker as well.

I"ve been taking it for at least 20 years now. Had trouble finding out why my B/P could not be controlled with the "usual" meds of the time. A smart General Practitioner at the V.A. in Temple, Texas realized I had been having some kidney problems, along with kidney stones. He had a blood test done, and said I secreted too much Renin from the kidneys. Started me on it, and have lowered the amount over the years, and doing great. One Doc decided to put me on a diuretic to keep me from retaining fluid at about age 50. (Was not retaining fluid) In the after noon, I could hardly stand up if it was over about 80 degrees. My regular Doc was back in about 3 months, and took me off. My target B/P is no higher than 140/90, and with the summer heat, and diuretic, it was dropping to 80/52!!! I have had a little skip in my heart beat for a while, and about a year ago, Norvasc was added in a small dose, and has helped. In a "previous life" I was a Peace Officer and Paramedic, but now I work regularly in a body shop, along the side of 20-30 year olds who don"t realize there is a difference between them, and a fella who is knocking on 60 hard. I also excercise daily, watch what I eat, and have a bride who is 10 years younger. Plan to see all the kids grown (1 left at home), and all the grandbabies in college at least before I slow down too much. I am also fortunate to have one of the Very Best V.A. Hospitals, and Outpatient Clinics around.

lisinopril is very well tolerated. one of the side effects if a dry cough -if this happens see if your doc will change meds -ACE inhibitors cause this, also watch how much salt substitute you use --it contains potassium. ACE inhibitors cause potassium retention. also some times it is given to protect kidneys if someone has any kidney damage or potential to do so ie diabetes Farmall 100 bs pharmacy University of NC 1986

Took it for a few years myself. It causes the cough/tickle in the throat as described. Also caused dizzyness/hot flashes for the first couple weeks. Lowered blood pressure as intended. Proper diet finally eliminated need for it. That"s the BEST medicine.

When I was younger, my blood pressure was always borderline high. As I got into the early to mid 50's, it went to high and the Dr put me on Lisinopril. Droped it to normal and has stayed there.Blood pressure last Tuesday was 125/75 when I gave platlets. I pretty much cut out salt altogether. I didn't know about the dry cough, but I do that also. Used to work with a hypochondrac, drove him nuts. Ha, Ha. Works well for me for the last 2 or 3 years. A friend I used to work with had high blood pressure and didn't want to go on medicine, so he started taking a table spoon of vinegar a couple times a day and his dropped to normal. My wife lost 130# and her BP dropped also. I'd say to go ahead and take it. Chris

I have been taking it for 3 years, 10 mg / per day along with Metoprolol 100mg 2x daily.
It works very well to maintain BP.
I have also had a dry, hacking, annoying, cough that I thought was from dust and pollen allergies.( also for 3 years)
Thanks to all for this post and information.

I been taking it for about 15 years, my doctor said that it had a diuretic in it, never noticed the cough. My BP is usually on the low side of normal. I take a heavy dose of Niacian to lower my chorestol. Have had knee pain off and on over the last few years as well as swelling and pain in my big toe. I learned last week that it is Gout and that both Niacin and Lisinopril raises the uric acid in your body and Gout is caused by uric acid crystals forming in the joint. All medicine causes some side effects. I think Lisinopril has the least of any. Good diet is the best solution if it works. I am 74, had cholestrol and BP problems most of my life.

What the others say. I take it with four others. I think they kind of mix it up to lessen the side effects. Never noticed the pee part cause I take lasic too. Good doctors and medicine has keep me alive for many years now.

at 20 the stuff made me very sleepy plus no pep in the morning, I take it at nite

cut back to 5mg and stuff is working just like it should, the higher dose was dropping my blood pressure too much

As with ANY prescrip med, GET AND READ THE "INSERT". The "handout" you get from the Pharm, usually a small 1/2 page or sheet, JUST HITS THE HIGH SPOTS re" side effects etc.
The insert you have to ask for--it"s the one with all the little teeny fine print, and you may encounter reluctance to hand one over.
Read it carefully. LOOK FOR: Counterindications or contraindications; Drug Interactions (if your Dr or Pharm doesn"t ask what else you"re taking, to look for bad interdrug reactions, do it yourself--there are websites that will, no charge); Precautions: Warnings, among other fascinating things, like whether that drug was ever tested on your gender, age, health situation. Good luck.

I have taken it for 4 years with no problem. If you are prone to the gout you don't want to take it with the diuretic because it will increase the frequency of a gout attach, I know from experiance.

My wife took it for a while and got the cough that is associated with it. The doctor took her off of it and has tried 3 other blood preasure meds and can't get rid of the cough for some reason.

I never got the cough.

Good Luck

Been on it for 3 years no side effects. Diet & exersize help also. Statin drugs for colesterol give me leg cramps.
