OT: question on F150

I hate to post a non tractor question but I'm not sure where else to ask. I need to change the alternator on my 98 F150. I can't tell what type of wrench and size to use to loosen the bolt on the belt tightener. Any body know what the bolt is?

It should be a spring type tensioner . It may take a socket, or a 3/ or 1/2 square drive, ie ratchet or breaker bar .

Use a 1/2" breaker bar if possible and insert this right into the square hole on the arm of the tensioner pulley. If not use a ratchet and maybe a pipe. dont forget to disconnect the battery! look for a sticker on your radiator support for the proper belt routing. You should replace the serpentine belt while you have it off. it should be around $30. it would cost alot more if it broke somehere down the road. make sure you take the alternator in and get the exact one to replace it. The books will say there are 3 different ones available, they have different amp ratings.

All of the fasteners holding the alternator on are metric. do not drop any down into the engine, you wont get them back. The intake manifold has space below it, where the bolt may go.

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I'm not seeing a square hole in the idler arm - all I see is what looks like a small bolt in the center that uses something like an allen wrench. Am I not looking in the right place. Changing the alternator looks pretty straight forward if I can get the belt off. I am planning to put on a new belt also as the old one has seen better days.

I just went out and looked, On my 1997 5.4 V-8 The hole is square and right on the axis of the idler pulley. It is right inline with the pulley.

yours might be an 8 sided hole, in which a square drive would fit. try it with the 1/2" square drive.

Can you just unbolt the alt, and get it off that way?
