what's everyone working on?

So with the weather the way it is, I've been working on some other projects. Today I tore apart a Gehl 920 chopper wagon, the steel over the apron drive shaft got feed under it which caught a couple slats (brand new chain befroe we bought it last fall) and tore them up. Called the dealer and the new steel is only $112, so we're gonna get it.

Tore some other steel out of the front end and took the aprons apart, gonna fix it up before we start looking at chopping hay in about a month or so.

We've actually been working ahead of ourselves as far as fixing stuff this year. The corn planter is ready to go, and now we're thinking further ahead. Kinda nice to be ready ahead of time.

Going to change the oil in 1850 then do some more work on skid steer repower with perkins 4-108.Hey Don did you ever find a gear box for your forage wagon.Scott

Workin on uncovering some more of the hay stack. It seems with 20+mph winds and 20 inches of wet snow things are kind of socked in around here. Dug the feeder out yesterday and bared a couple of places for the calves to lay down until the rest of the snow melts. Moisture content was about 1.25 inches so I am truly ready for spring. Bud

replacing rear half of frame rails on a 75 chevy 3/4 ton p.u. with a 4 cly. isuzu turbocharge diesel and a.t. my toy and plow truck. still has to earn its way.

With the really wet weather in Michigan I power washed the deck today......I need for it to dry to put on a new coat of stain.

And today I used the tractor to rip out some grass along the driveway so I can widen the gravel drive.

I am putting new bearings in the front gang of a Kewanee disk and getting my spray rig ready to spray weeds, also burning brush weather permitting.

Been straight out planting fields with my farmer friend, 65 acres of oats was the total, and I forget exactly how much corn has gone in so far, might be 80-90 acres on that, think there's about 150 to go. Real dry around here and no shortage of work I've repaired the late model 637 JD disc, (think thats the model) 2x already, the outer disc rear gang snapped off the hub, rebuilt that with 7018, the base is still tweaked/bent, but it's just an extension, he should get a new part, too labor intense to straighten it, and one of the 1/2" thick mild steel angles that holds one side of the front gang at the lift cylinder, had to be welded up, almost tore right off, just had about 1"-2" to go, and it would have let loose and bought that cylinder. All of this is on the same side, someone hit something with it, like a darned tree or something as I've never seen 1/2" angle rip like that. The repair came out nice, though a new angle should be installed, that 7018 laid in nice, and is not likely to fail, just about gone through 10lbs. of electrode, and a tank of fuel in my miller nt 251 doing repairs for him. Been helpin out clearing/pushing back hedgerows, & other misc work on barter for tractor time with his 3150 w/loader, to gather up logs and firewood, went like heck today to stay ahead of the disc and planter, one load out, dropped a big leaner today, little too close for comfort as it bounced left in front of me, the one time I stayed a little closer than normal, dropping trees is some dangerous work. He gave me 1/2 an acre of hardwood, going to be cleared to expand a field, lot of wood there, might have to see what is mill grade etc. rest firewood. Widened a road for him at another farm where he rents 70 acres with a late model 450 JD dozer, got some seat time in, been 5 years, work came out really nice, you never forget those skills. Just too much work and not enough time to get it done, spring always is everything at once it seems, and boy am I just beat up after today, just had my evening cold one and a light dinner, plumb wore out.

Making one good JD # 5 mower out of 7 parts machines a friend has at his yard.Quite interseting the beating these mowers take and all the repairs that have been done to them to keep them going.

Just got of the phone with a fella going to make time to look at J.D.80 tractor, price is right been along time since that kind of green has been around here.Scott

Adding on to the house. Built the house myself in the '90s with the idea of adding on someday. Decided I'm not 35 years old anymore, so I'm hiring a contractor to do the addition. So far I think it's harder finding a contractor than it is to just build it myself.

Got laid off 2 weeks ago. So what ever doesn't cost much or anything. Stuff I have material for but didn't have time time to do when I was working

With the wet weather theres not much road construction this week or next. We"ve done most everything at the farm to get stuff ready for field work. New blades on 20" disk, fixed closing wheels and other bent stuff on the bean drill. New oil, filters and maintenance on JD 4430 and 4840. Tons of other odds and ends. Just sitting waiting for it to dry. Actually been working on repairing rust spots on my 93 buick commuter car.

I got laid off 9 weeks ago. Been selling machinery on ebay, blasting and painting it also before selling. Got a part time job at the Polaris dealer. But could only work 16 hours then have to give back half of what I made to the govt., unless he paid me cash. I said keep it legal neither one of us need any IR troubles. He agreed. Today was my last day though. I couldn't justify driving 35 miles a day and giving almost half back of what I make because I'm drawing unemployment, and not being able to paint and sell machinery let alone not not being able to look for another job because I'm tied up working part time on 4 wheelers. I'll just stay home and keep selling equipment. I enjoy that much better anyway. Get more satisfaction out of doing that. I can work at my own pace. I've sold about $5,000.00 this spring already just in small equipment.

If it doesn't quit raining , I am going to build an Ark and load it full of old trucks and tractors and a few critters.

I saw one on the photo ads here a couple weeks ago, but the wagon isn't worth that much. Probably gonna just take it off the gear and do something else.

We need to atleast the 2 wagons ready to go for hay in a month, our other wagon is a 18 ft. Gehl 970 that hasn't given us any troubles yet. We bought the 920 last fall at my 2nd cousin's estate auction after he was killed in a farm accident. He replaced the apron chain in it not too long ago and I knew it, so I encouraged my dad to bid on it because I knew of some of the work done to it and I knew it'd be a fairly decent wagon. Unfortunately you can't predict everything. Of the 4 Gehl wagons in the line up, the one we bought brought the most ($400) because it was the first one. The rest were all 940's or 960's and brought less, but I didn't know the extent of work done to them as well.

I changed the oil in my 1600 on Wed., and started thinking about adding a precleaner to the air inlet, as the oil bath air cleaner gets so nasty so fast on it. It'd be nice if a precleaner was on it to screen out the bigger stuff before it goes to the oil bath. On agpartfirst a Turbo 2 preclener is less than $100, but that needs to wait for now atleast.

Took the final drive apart on our excavator now looking for used parts. Building some floating docks and on my own time rebuilding the motor on my 600 Ford. Anybody want to trade a ford tractor a nice floating dock?

Went to New Hampshire yesterday to a maple equipment dealer's open house and seminars. Got a few good ideas, looked at a lot of EXPENSIVE new equipment. Tried to make deal on a used pan, not sure I will do it. Stopped at the JD dealer on the way home, ordered parts for my old dozer, I need to put the transmission back together and get it out of my shop, so I can work on something else.

Today I am going over the hill to the "crooked equipment auction". Take that any way you want to. I have bought several pieces of crooked equipment there over the years, some of them I got straightened out, some not. Other folks have implied that the auction itself may be crooked. My buddy called last night, he did a drive-by of the site, says there isn't a lot there. People are keeping their junk and trying to use it instead of replacing it.

What's up with Gehl? I am also working on one, a 2160 10 foot mower conditioner. I just got the bat reels I ordered. Only 64 dollars each for the 10 foot bars, galvanized and HEAVY. The IH guy gets 64 dollars for part of a bearing!
The 2160 is getting a makeover, new tires, wheel bearings.chains, guards, sections, holddowns, bushings for the rake bar, and 14 new rake teeth.I'll have a total of about 2400 bucks in it, and it's just about new again. Rubber roller looks to be 90%. Going to hook up to it today and give it a test run. Alfalfa is going crazy here and looks like we'll be mowing before 1 June.

Oats are up - planted them two weekends ago. Now to get the hay making equipment out and start fixing for the haying season. Mower and rake are minor fixes, baler needs a few new parts, most in stock, but I have a wagon running gear that needs a hayrack. That one is going to cast me a bit of $ and time. Also have a bunch of equipment that needs water/sand blasting and painting. Oh, plow the garen and plant same. DISKED IT UP A COUPLE TIMES, AND NOW WEED SEEDLINGS ARE POPPING UP ALL OVER!

Nothing yet today thank God. I spent 3 days this week fixing one of the bottom augers in the V-Max spreader. I broke about 4 feet off the back end of it at the rear carrier. Had to cut away the twisted stuff, grind down a piece of four and a half inch OD pipe, drive it inside and weld it all back together. One of these days, that spreader is going to the scrapper.

Repainting the back fender of the Kubota today- I turned too sharp when pasture harrowing, and the front bar of the pasture harrow rode up over the back tire, ended up stuck behind the tire. Had to take the fender off to get it out- I was lucky there wasn't much damage. Neighbor came over to help, suggested a 3 foot piece of chain between hitch and harrow, to get it back further. "Wish I'da thought of that."

Back in the '40s and 50s, everyone knew someone who'd been killed or seriously injured pulling a (double) section harrow with a chain hooked to each end and hooked to the belly drawbar. Few of the tractors (at least around 'here') had fenders and it was easy for operator to pull the harrow up on top of himself. Usually, the most inexperienced operator would be 'put' to harrowing.

I notice a lot of restored tractors dont have fenders on them,I always wondered why,I was told by a guy in Tn that if he had fenders on a tractor he would take them off and run over them,I have spent a lot of time on older tractors and cant imgaine not having them,

Going to wash my Case La , so it will be ready to go to Pella's Tulip Time [next week=end ..May 7-9 ]

New Starter solenoid for skidsteer. Relace round baler belts. Oh yeah, haul cattle to the pasture. Cut up tree in yard to keep wife happy. And plant two trees to replace the one. Then I have to work 50 hours at the day job. I am tired and the season is only starting...some times I wonder why I do it.
