Some time ago it was discussed on this forum about safety when pulling with a chain or cable and the possibility of it breaking and whipping around and hurting someone. Well, my late neighbor's grandson put a chain around a rock to pull it and it tore and whipped around and hit him under his throat. He was alone at the time, so he went to the house and told his daughter to get her mother. By the time his wife came to him he couldn't talk so they called 911 and took him to the hospital, but he died on the way. That should make some of us think.

So sad to hear it happen again. All you have to do is to throw a blanket, or jacket over the middle of the chain, and all that energy is dissipated downward. Every time I pull somebody out of the river, I insist on this basic safety precaution.

Had a young local popular high school boy here a week ago pull a truck out of the mud. Tractor flipped over and boy was killed. His mom and dad are local farmers who are heartbroke. Please always remember Safety First.
