i have a ford 4000 diesel and i bought a new volys of regulator and had the generator checked it was good the battery will stay up for about 3 weeks and i have to charge it could it be the battery not holding a good charge i think its about 4 years old but not sure.

Wash the top off good so it's very clean. Then take off the ground cable, look for any spark as you disconect and reconect it. If you see a spark find the parisitic draw and disconnect it. Three weeks is a long time so draw down is very small.

Is the battery full of water? Those design tractors tend to cook the batteries pretty hard becuase of the battery location.

Take the ground cable off the battery and see it still dies. If it doesn't you probably have a battery drain. Use a hydrometer to check the electrolyte in each cell and write down each reading and compare the readings. Should be around 1.260-1.270 on a fully charged battery. If
you have one cell that reads real low you probably need to replace the battery. Hal

First check to be sure the generator is CHARGING the battery. You can get a cheap digital voltmeter from Radio Shack. Check the battery voltage with the engine running.Voltage should be 13.8 volts or higher but not above 14.6. If below 13.8 the charging system is not working or has a very low output.

Generator or alternator? I have had alternators with leaky diodes, defective voltage regulators. Usually will discharge battery within a day or so. Alternator might become warm to the touch if discharging thru field coil. Had one where regulator would sense voltage drop on battery when door was opened and dome lite came on. Would then turn current on to field, even when the engine was off. Wife would typically get out of car, go around to passenger side, and grap purse, lunch bag, close doors and go in to work. By quitting time, battery was dead. If she grabbed her stuff and exited thru driver's door, wouldn't trigger VR. Don't think that was easy to diagnose. Went back to rebuild shop 3 times, got new VRs, and all were defective. Finally doug old VR out of the scrap box. No more trouble.

The recommendation to remove the battery cable is OK if done when the engine is not running. I do not recommend removing a battery cable while the engine is running.
