Nashville, TN -- Singer Vern Gosdin, who recorded country music hits like the award-winning "Chiseled in Stone" during a 30-year career, has died. He was 74.

Michael Illobre, funeral director at Mount Olivet Funeral Home in Nashville, says Gosdin was under hospice care and died late Tuesday at an area hospital.

The singer's administrative assistant, Dawn Hall, told The Tennessean that he suffered a stroke a few weeks ago.
"Chiseled in Stone" was voted 1989 song of the year by the Country Music Association."

I hate to hear that news. Back when I was spinning records, he was one of my favorite country artists.

Here's a link to a song that was initially a hit for the Gosdin Brothers, and then was redone by Vern Gosdin and Emmylou Harris...one of my favorites of all times:
Hangin On

I always liked ol'Vern. Lots of good songs. Never thought about him up and dying. May have to have a wake.

Well....if that"s the case..that Vern was known as the "Voice", then there"ll have to be a National day of Mourning when the Possum (George Jones) dies.

Vern was one of the few that could bend a note as tight as The Possum and make it his own, as opposed to those tryin' to sound like The Possum. We didn't call him The Voice for nothin'. I knew of him from back in his days in California playin' bluegrass with a band that put out an album but never played in public, the Hillmen, that included Chris Hillman of the Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers fame, as well as Don Parmley of the Bluegrass Cardinals.

His brother Rex was no slouch of a musician either.

Had heard that song a few times, mebbe with Roy Clark????
Every now and then there's two pair of feet that stomp this globe,
come together and make a song.
Having just heard it the first time, (of these two) I'd say that was THEIR song. RIP Vern.

Scott - I enjoy Charlie Sizemore's song - "Blame It On Vern".

I always viewed it as a nice tribute to an influential musican/singer.

Vern made a lot of good music.

My favorite Gosdin song is "That Just About Does It Don't It". I have requested that the chorus be played at the end of my funeral service, because I want everyone to have one last chuckle with me. doorman
