best tractor

I want to know what everyone thinks is the best tractor. I prefer the tractors from the 60's and 70's along with some from the 80's. Some of my favorites are the John Deere 2520, 3020, 4020, 4320, Oliver 1655, 1855, 2255, White American 60, 80, Farmall 806, 706, 1206, Minneapolis Moline G1000, M670, G1355, Allis Chalmers D17, D19, Massey Ferguson 1080, 1085, 1135, 1155. idk tell me what you think.

Best one is one thats paid for and does what you want it too...unless you're a collector ...then one of each of your favorite brand would be the "best"...and best not tell the wife in advance of your plans...Charles...LOL

H Farmall and D19 Allis Chalmers. I inherited the H from my father-in-law and the D19 from my father.

Seriously, if I could afford one, I'd get a D-8 Cat and spend a couple of years rearranging the landscape.

Andrew...!! Having the "BEST" tractor is the very heart of Yesterday's Tractor. Why do you think a person would spend more on an old tractor than they would even consider spending on their spouse? Meanwhile I think mine is probaly "The Best",but can only be certain after I have looked at all the others, which is the best way I can think of to spend one's spare time. Have fun and stop trying to stir up an argument. Good luck with whichever you choose.

The best all-around tractor, hands down, is the Essex Tri-Directional. I have been unable to find one and have looked so long and hard that I might just have to break down and buy a Ford 9N. (;>))

Bingo!! on the Essex! Great tractor.

Anyone looking for one or information about one should contact "Les" on "Tractor Tales." He has some stashed away in one of his sheds up in New England.

JD 4000/late 4020. Everyone will have an opinion, but no one can change mine. The 4010 was a real breakthrough, a marvel at the time. But the '69-72 4020 is tops in my book. How many 8n's, B's, M's, etc. are working every day on REAL farms? Not "hobbying around", but earning $$$. Those late 4020's, while not the main work horse any more, are still in use on full-time commercial farms every day. I've put over 15,000 hrs each on 2 of them myself.

Lots of good candidates out there, and all have merit

Greatness has to be judged on era. Iowa you are certianly right that the JD new generation changed everything and that the improvements on the 20 series made 3020/4020's productive tractors for 40 years. Same can be said for IH 806, 706 series.

However that does not take anything away from earlier tractors. If you look at IH H and M. Those tractors were introduced in '39 and there were still plenty of them earning their keep on working farms 40 years later.

The one your neighbor owns, keeps full of fuel and the maintenance repairs done, but wants you to keep it at your place because it doesn't get used enough at his farm.

Paul.....I like your positive way of thinking...I only WISH it was 1979 again! (1939 plus 40). I could have some hope knowing Reagan was about to take over.

I would say 4020 and 4320 followed by any of the 44xx deeres. I love those tractors. I would also like the chance to run a 2510 or 2520 they seem like an excellent tractor.

One that starts when you need to use it and is still running when you are done using it. Brand means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

my personal faves are the ford jubilee and the deere 3020.

The jube's only faults are the lack of pulling power, no diff lock (i know, they weren't around then), and no live PTO. It's a great, simple.

The 3020 can handle anything you throw at it... or have a good go at it, anyway.

Here it is

The best tractor is which ever one you have that gets the job done. I'm sure you have opened the proverbial can of worms here though. Some people have strong loyalties.
