I have a few dozen brussel sprout seedlings and I was wondering how long to wait to plant them outside. they areabout 2 1/2 weeks old now. I am in NW Penna. Any sprout farmers out there? How about broccoli farmers? I have a few dozen of those started too. I just always bought sets, but tried to start some of my own this year. Got some nice looking tomatos and some nice peppers too. Just a little unsure of myself with the broccoli and sprouts! Thanks Y'all!

I can't help you with the brussels sprouts as I rate them right alongside creamed corn. You don't want to keep broccoli inside too long. To get a good head, you need a good sized plant before they get ready to make a head. I like to plant them out once they have 3 or maybe 4 true leaves. It depends on your weather. We're in southern Missouri and for us summer heat is more of an issue than cold when it comes to spring planted cole crops, so we try to plant earlier in the year.

Don't know about your area but here in KY we like to set the cole crops out in late March or early April. However I just got most of mine out a few days ago. Broccoli does well here as does brussel sprouts. BS's take a long time to make sprouts so get them out ASAP and don't give up on them.
