Diffirences between Farmall IH C and the Super C model

Now that I have discovered by checking my serial number against the production numbers that My 1952 Farmall is a Super C and not a C as I believed at the time of purchase.

what is the diffirences between the two tractor models C and Super C ?

The differences that matter are the 10 extra cubic inches, water pump, thermostat, and disc brakes. The radiator is also larger which means the grill is taller (as is the hood and fuel tank).

If you get looking there are a whole host of smaller parts that were changed including the brake and clutch pedals, steering wheel, steering shaft support, temperature gauge(?) and so on. Hope that helped, Sam

There's a short shopping list of differences.

Pedals -- on a C they were fairly straight, SC they curved back toward the operator

Brakes -- band brakes on a C, disc on a SC

Motor -- 113 in a C, 123 in a SC

Radiator -- taller by about 2" on the SuperC, which leads to other differences, like a taller grille and a wider gap between the top of the hydraulic block and the bottom of the fuel tank on the SC

Cooling -- SC came stock with a water pump in place of the plain inlet at the bottom left front of the crankcase, and a thermostat in the upper neck. The upper neck was different from that on the C so that it could a) accommodate the thermostat and b) reach to the taller radiator.

There will also be slight differences in the transmission casting to accommodate the fast-hitch.

I too brought what I thought was a C at an auction. After some reseach on line here I too was delighted to find out it was a 51 super C. Put more money into it than I expected to but am real happy with it.

How ya comin' with the overheating problem?

Since it's turned out to be a SuperC, the thermostat is immediately suspect.

One oddball thought (I think I've developed a reputation for havin' those from time to time). This tractor doesn't by chance have radiator shutters on it, does it, like my '51 has? If NOT you should be able to look directly through the grille and see the fin tubing on the front of the radiator. If you see a bunch of upright slats between the grille and radiator, you have shutters. Make sure they're open. They should operate with a lever that looks a lot like your throttle lever except with square-cut notches located on the left side of your instrument panel, right about where your left foot would rest. Forward on the lever opens the shutters. Pulling back closes them. I'm always reminded when I have them closed because my trouser leg always manages to hook over the top of the lever, keeping me from just sliding my foot over to the clutch pedal.

If they are there and are anything but fullly open and the lever won't make them operate, you'll need to remove the grille and work at loosening them up. If the tractor sat for a long time, they could be rusted or otherwise bound in place.

I really appreciate all your posts and I will immediately check for a termostat and change it.I also noticed the rad cap is painted black.I am wondering if the release may be sealed, may need freeing up or perhaps a new cap

Scotty: With your extensive knowledge of IH tractors, and especially to this reply, do you know where I can find the shutter control rod assembly? That's the last piece that I need for restoring a Super A. I have the quadrant control, shutters, and brackets that mount on the generator bracket and on the hydraulic reservoir. Thanks in advance for any leads. Wayne

Hi Guys, as a follow up to discussions on my Farmall IH Super C,I have posted pictures in the tractor photos. My as found picture is there without decals when I believed it was a C.

I added a current picture today after cleanup with decals in place.

You're far more complimentary than I deserve, but thank you.

I can do a little checking over the next couple of days. I can think of one guy in particular that MIGHT have them, but he's tearin' up ground and planting just now. I'll see if I can get hold of him.

Findin' them would be a REAL lucky break. Can't say that I've ever happened across any.

They're really just hardware items -- some 5/16" rod with left-hand threads at the rear of the front one and right-hand at the front of the rear rod, a coupling to adjust them and a jam nut on each end of the coupling. The LH thread for the front jam nut might take a little searching, as would a LH die to thread the end of the front rod (machine shop could probably do that part for you), but it wouldn't be a hard thing to fab up.

If you'd like, my email is open, gimme a shout. I can measure up the one on my SuperC. It looks entirely different at the front end in the parts books from the one for the SuperA, probably because the SC has the steering shaft running down the left side. But if you'd like I can tell you how it's routed and put together a little drawing with some dimensions if you think it'd be helpful.

Lemme know.
