OT; Reason for the 21 horses dying

They now claim that a prescription filled by a pharmacy in Florida was the cause of death. I wonder if the prescription was written correctly by the vet. Big lawsuit down the road. Hal

I got an email today from Feed & Grain that explained that what the horses were given was a compound of mostly vitamins to help the horses recover quickly from strenuous exercise.

The compound that the horses were given is illegal in the US and is not approved by the FDA. It is widely used in Europe and South America and is patented by a European company.

The horses died from hemorages but the exact cause wasn't appearent although no one is disputing that the drug is the culprit. 5 other horses in the same group were not effected but also were not given the drug.

I heard it was the selenium in the compound, don't know anything about it, I'm not a vet, nor do I play one on tv, just relating what the reporter was saying. We know that reporters never make mistakes!

I remember a vet giving me injectable E-selenium for young bottle fed calves to prevent white muscle disease. He said a small amount of selenium is necessary but it didn't take much of an overdose to be toxic. One component of the horse dope in Fla. was selenium.

Story I saw said pharamancy mixed the drug wrong.

Could have been worse....... at least it was not kids or adults.
