ih 666 overheats when shut off

My ih 666 overheats when I shut it off

i can run it for a hour or more

my temperature gauge says 190 degrees

when it is running it has no problems

i turn the tractor off its fine for a minute or 2 then i hear a boiling noise deep in the engine

it builds until it starts puking coolant

It took me 2 hours to get at the thermostat

the pin was clear thru the top of the thermostat

my question

will overheating the engine a few time do it any harm

it was running perfectly before i took it apart

i will get my parts Friday then i can put it back together and find out

Are you giving the engine a few minutes idling time between working hard and shut off ? They need a little no load running / idle time for the temperature to normalize in the engine parts, especially the cylinder head. also make sure the cooling system is maintaining pressure, a bad pressure cap that does not maintain system pressure may allow boil over at shutdown.

Stan,

That is totally normal occurance on any liquid cooled engine.

When you shut a hot engine off, all cooling processes stop, but the residual heat is still there in all that iron mass. It's gonna boil internally for a short time.

If your radiator is puking over, make sure the cap is good. Otherwise (and this is an IH trait) you've got 'er too darned full.

the thermostat was broken

the reason it worked sometimes and not others because the pin was moving up and down thru the hole

Allen, I think you"re being a little too broad on the stopped engines gurgling or boiling...
You"re perfectly correct re" an engine worked hard and then just shut off, particularly, as you said, on engines with a lot of heat soaked cast iron...
On the other hand, if the engine hasn"t been worked hard, and it isn"t 103 in the shade, and it still actually boils enough to spit out coolant, I"d say something isn"t working quite right in the system...
You"re also correct when you say some models don"t like to be filled too high.

Comon' now,

Think about it. Engine is shut off. The only two things yer dealin’ with is hot metal and coolant.

Take any engine on the planet. Get it hot, shut it off and then LISTEN. After a bit, it's gonna "gurgle" inside. That is nothing more than anti-freeze boiling inside against that hot metal.

Recovery tanks work with this phenomenon. It's how they operate.

Test the thermostat in a tuna can of water on the stove.Monitor the water temp with a meat thermometer. Its opening temp is marked on the thermostat body.

Also remember the thermostat is just there to restrict coolant flow until it needs cooling so if it was bad the coolant would boil over while running hot. So it about has to be either too much cooland or bad cap.
