16 HP MTD No spark

I have an early 70's MTD with a 16hp Briggs. The engine model is 326431 and has no spark. This engine has had the points removed and coil updated. I have no spark and have replaced the coil.

Is it possible to use a normal automotive 12 volt coil on this engine if i reinstall the points?

If not any ideas what would cause the no spark issue.

Thanks

First you must determine if your points are closing full, make sure your gap isn't too much that they don't close fully. Second clean the points with clean piece of paper. Thirdly make sure you don't have a wire or eyelet touching ground that shouldn't be touching the ground.

If you have a coil that is actually a mag that is activated by the magnets on the flywheel you must have the correct gap between the magneto and flywheel magnets.

the points gap is .020, spark plug .030
Loosen the 2 screws holding the magneto while holding a business card between flywheel and magneto. Rotate the flywheel to where the magnet pulls the 2 together, tighten screws, remove card, do what John sez first then post back.

The points have been removed and the coil upgraded to a newer mag system.

This tractor ran for a few years on this system, the coil wire got damaged so I got a new coil and installed it with the proper gap between the flywheel marnets and the coil.

I still don't have any spark. The magnet on the flywheel feels very strong, it will hold a wrenchand takes some pull to remove it.

Thanks

The original coil and points were probably replaced with a magnetron armature (coil) and doesn't require any points. Touch those magnets on the flywheel with a screwdriver to see they have strong magnetism. Clean off any rust. Make sure none of the safety switches are the culprit. I would jumper them to isolate the problem. Make sure its out of gear. It probably has one here. You can go back to the auto type coil & points. You will need battery voltage fed through an ignition switch to the + plus side of the coil and to the points from the negative terminal on the coil. Be sure to disconnect the wires on the magnetron. Disconnect the wire to the coil and see if it starts. The wire is a ground back to your key to ground it out and kill it. All the safety switches cause a ground to kill it.

That pic is somewaht different than the coil my Briggs dealer sold me.

Do you happen to have apart number for that coil.

My model; is 326431 Code; 0189-1, I don't have the date code, but do know it is the later one that takes the newer coil.

Thanks

Be sure you have the coil on right. They can be put on backwards and they will not spark. The Magnetron coil need the little bump on ht e coil positioned to the left when mounting. Some coils are marked with outside and inside. You should see the outside mark when you are done.

Thats the problem, my coil does not have the little bump that would go to the left. I think I was sold the wrong part, which is great since you can't return it........

Do you know the part number for the magnetron coil?

What's the type number on your engine? I can find out what the correct number is for the magnetron. Hal
PS: The pic I posted is the magnetron on one of my mowers.

(quoted from post at 10:40:55 04/22/09) Here's another view of my Magnetron used on one of my mowers. Hal

Thanks Hal.

I went back to the Briggs dealer and picked up the proper coil. I will try it this evening and post results.

Thanks again for all the info and help.

They sold you a point type coil. If you still have the points and condenser you can connect them and go. No, I do not know the Magnetron P/N.
