Wife says it's a sickness. New project, 1987 El Comino, stored for 12 years,41000 miles. I need a wiring diagram for this car because the fuel pump won't work and I don't know if it is the pump or a wiring problem. Thanks for any help someone can give.

They make wiring diagram books. The public
library at LaCrosse Wisconsin has those books,
which are big oversize books, by, Mitchells, I
think. Other librarys, or tech school librarys
should have them. But i"ll bet that they"re on
the web someplace!

You should have have battery voltage to that fuel pump with the ignition switch on. I replaced a pump in a Chevy Citation that had the TBI injection. Use a volt meter or a test lite to see if you have voltage to the pump. Your local Chevy dealer probably has a service manual stored somewhere. They may be able to make a copy of the wiring diagram. I had a fuel gauge on the Citation since it would just quit like it ran out of gas. I think the pressure was suppose to be around 15 or 16 psi. I noticed on a hard pull the pressure would drop. I decided to pull the tank and it was full of rust and crud. I vacuumed it out with a wet or dry vacuum cleaner.
I decided to install new pump since it was a lot of work to remove the tank and drain it. I bought the pump at PepBoys. Cost was about $50.00. That fixed the problem. You can run a separate hot wire back to the pump from the battery. There should be an electrical connector
outside the tank that you can separate and feed voltage to the pump. Hal

DO NOT vacuun a gasoline tank that has ANY fuel in it with a shop-vac. The arcing of the shop-vac universal AC brushed can cause the fuel vapor to EXPLODE in the shop-vac. Go to a carwash and use a pressure washer to clean the tank. YOU WERE VERY LUCKY YOU ARE STILL HERE.

Make a long "jumper" out of 14ga wire put an in line fuse in it and connect the fuel pump direct to see which is the problem. Don't forget there is a safety switch that detects oil pressure to shut the fuel pump off in the event of rollover. Usually the ignition switch in the start position bypasses the safety switch untill oil pressure is detected on startup.
