Well folks we got the job done without insident. Started digging about 9:30a.m. and finished digging the last hole(#12)around 11:30a.m. Hit a couple small roots in the first hole but after that it was smooth drillin, not the first rock, and the ground was dry enough to not stick to the auger. I suspected we'd be a little sore yesterday and/or today but feelin good. For the $30 rental I'm glad I went that way. Thanks for everyones advise.

Well, you're a better man than I. Two man drill almost done me and the otherguy in. NEVER again!
Glad you got it done, and noone hurt.

Congratulations. Always nice to hear someone prove us naysayers wrong. If I was in your shoes with the same post, I'd be beating a path to the rental place to try to prove everyone wrong.

A lot depends upon your soil type. Spring is the best time for digging holes. The winter freeze/thaw cycle softens up the dirt. Then in the summer it dries out and turns into hardpan. Around here that clay is hard when frozen and then starting around the middle of the summer when it is dry. The summer is usually when I get around to a project and the ground is like rock.

When driving posts in the summer I keep a bucket of water handy. Pour a little at the spot and then pour a little as I drive. Sure goes easier.

How many horsepower engine did yours have and are you guys the size of Paul Bunyan?

I think I mentioned in your other post- I paid a guy 20 bucks to pound 12 posts, and that's sure the way to go, if there's anyone around you who does it. I have a 3 point auger, and it works fine, but then you've still gotta set the posts. The pounded ones are much tighter than mine (and I DO know how to set a post, after 50 or so years practice!), and lots less effort.

Glad to hear your session went without a hitch.
