OT/Disturbing movie

Since it's kind of a rainy day in parts of the country,I'll stir it up a little. I saw kind of a disturbing movie on the Comedy Channel yesterday. It was called "Idiocracy". It really hit way to close to home if you think about it. A dullard played by Luke Wilson went ahead in time 500 years just to find out that at that time,he was the smartest person in the world. Everybody just followed fads and causes without thinking. All the crops were dying because they were watering them with a Gatorade like stuff. Billboards all over said it had electrolites, the stuff plants need. When he asked them why,all anybody would say was "it's the stuff plants need",then they looked at him like he was the stupid one. The whole movie was like that. No science,no progress, just dumb@sses beleving everything they read on billboards and such. The president and his cabinet were just a bunch of pot headed partiers.

It just made me wonder how far we'll go toward self destruction before we quit giving in to every cause that some bleeding heart sends down the pike. Every thing from global warming to animal rights,to the race baters, there has to be some faith in real science, real economics and common sense sooner or later. Hopefully sooner....real soon in fact. We're going the wrong way and we can't keep this up much longer. I keep telling my wife, people will come to their senses soon, that hungry people don't care about the luxury of "causes",but everyday, more crap just keeps bombarding us.

I saw that movie a few weeks ago and found it amusing, but true. I see things like this already taking place. Sometimes I wonder how people function in life, let alone prosper.

I don't know how it is where YOU are, but from here (central Ohio), Fertile minds are NOT being produced in our Schools..
"Work to get by", then go home and vegetate until the alarm wakes them for work--(IF they work)..
Video games are the "New Drug" and down-fall of the general public now..
My gosh, We worked full-time (Journeyman Ironworker, myself), Farmed, raised xmas trees too, was on the Volunteer Fire Dept, had a 4-H Club AND helped the neighbors...
I agree, HOW Far will we let it go...??
The average American has been "Dummied-Down" to an Alarming level..and it certainly is getting worse...

I can tell you one thing, I have a couple of college friends here that don't know what oil does let alone how to check or change it in their car. They also don't know how to change a tire. I offered to show them and told them it was easy but they refused and said they would rather just call AAA if stuck on the side of the road with a flat.

We went to a concert at Central Michigan University this past Friday night. A young girl, obviously a college freshman, sat down beside me with what must have been her Dad. She made small talk with him for a minute, then she pulled a paper out of her purse to show him what she'd been studying. She obviously bought into it all the way she was talking. I doubt she'd ever been any farther than the distance between her home and the college. She was definately a worshiper at the alter of environmentalism. She was telling her dad how the tops had been blown off ALL the mountains in the Appalachians,ALL the streams there were polluted, the air was unbreathable because of dust from the explosions. She was convinced that alternative energy was cheaper than conventional sources...it was just about unbearable to listen to. If the host hadn't come out and started the show when he did,I would have had to have gotten up and left. I guess I knew people like that exsted, but I'd never actually had to sit and listen to one in person. It's VERY scarry to know they're real.

I have said it before on this board, but there's a whole lot of people that haven't a clue about how to provide the simplest most basic of human needs for themselves. There is opportunity there for those of us that can, but it's hard to get anything of value out of someone that's starving or freezing to death. I am pretty sure that most of us on this board are a pretty self-reliant bunch. As Dennis Miller said on TV the other night "I don't mind helping the helpless, but I don't want to help the clueless". Just my opinion,
Paul

To address your comment below about the girl that thinks the environment is going to *ell in a handbasket.

I have a question for these global warming bozos.

For 25 years the left has said that the state of Florida is going to be swallowed up by the ocean. ----Well this still hasnt happened yet.---

Can anyone in the science community give me concrete factual information that Global warming is real? To give me a reason to feel the slightest bit worried about the car exhaust that comes out of my car?
I say *uck *ou Al Gore you are lying sack of *hit.

People are adaptable and these tough economic times just may force a lot of them to learn to do some of the things that we older guys take for granted.

Well you can say whatever you want to,its a free country.I dont know whether there is global warming or not.Im real sure you can find a bunch of people that claim there is global warming and a bunch that claim there isnt. However in the news there are people being evacuated from South Pacific Islands because the ocean is rising. In the last few hundred years the ice caps have gotten smaller and the level of the oceans have risen.Maybe not as much as some said they will, but enough to flood some islands. This could be normal, but nobody is around from times years ago when there werent ice caps to tell us.However that movie Idiocracy is an example of what this country is turning into.Educated idiots that wont admit the truth and believe lies and liars. At the rate its going now it wont take 500 years and our country will be worse than the movie.

A number of years before I retired from factory maintenance, we had a girl that was selected as an apprentice electrician. She didn't know that when drilling a hole that you had to put pressure on the drill. She thought that you just held the drill there and it went right through.

T- 40, can you cite the source for the island evacuations? Perhaps that reporter from CNN who covered the tea parties?

Well they claim the temp will rise one degree in a hundred years. All I know is if it 20 below and it goes to 19 below. You aint gonna feel it.

Let me see if I follow you: You are "disturbed" by a lowbrow Hollywood comedy, which you accept to be an accurate depiction of the future. On the other hand you dismiss global warming and pretty much everything else you happen to disagree with as not "real".

I think you need to work on your own critical thinking skills, before criticizing anyone else's.

That was a pretty funny movie. We refer to it at work very often. The part that seems to be the most accurate is the family tree on the stupid people branching out to hundreds of kids while the very educated and financially sound couple never had any kids and the lady ended up alone. We got a kick out of the "fudruckers" restaraunt too!

Paul: I like the part about not helping the clueless. Here is the prescient information, taken from the link that you provided: Despite popular opinion and calls to action, the Maldives are not being overrun by sea level rise, this according to a March 19, 2009 post on Anthony Watt's blog Watts Up With That? at http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/03/19/despite-popular-opinion-and-calls-to-action-the-maldives-is-not-being-overrun-by-sea-level-rise/

In a reply to this posting Dr. Don Easterbrook says: Attached is photographic evidence by Morner that sea level in the Maldives is not rising relative to the coasts but has indeed fallen! Global sea level has been rising at a rate of about a foot per century but the Maldives are either rising or subject to a local sea level anomaly related to ocean currents and evaporation rates.

You can see the photos at the URL in the first paragraph of my post. I was originally hoping that T-40 would come to his own defense, but as you have stepped up to the plate, its you that gets called out on strikes!

Yes they are real and in many cases you are paying for their existense. My two BIL's thank you for you generous tax support.

Well Diy I went and read about 5 articles about it that I Googled but I think it was on Yahoo where I read it a few days ago.Anyway after reading up on it a couple of islands already have evacuated and they were close to India. Then I read a conflicting report about the sea level not changing in the last 100 years, and it actually said it went down a little, then a few more that said it was going higher.Tuvalu-First victim of rising ocean level was the name of the last article http://www.truehealth.org/climnwos.html was the one that I think was on Yahoo news.
After all of this reading it seems like somebody has an agenda to make it sound like the ocean is rising, and somebody else has an agenda to say its not rising. All I can say is that islands are being evacuated because the ocean level is rising. The ice caps are getting smaller. Now beyond that,to claim we are doing it,or that its because of man is a real stretch of the mind. When you have signs in archaeology of big asteroids hitting Earth, big volcanoes erupting, and even the whole planet turning and being covered with ice before,it would be hard to say we are having all that much influence on the weather, ice melting, and oceans rising. These things probably are going to happen if we are here or not.Yet burning stuff like oil and coal probably does contribute to some pollution being in the air,and since we breathe air,we ought to try and not pollute it.I think we have cut our pollution from the 70s,at least in this country.Maybe we can do better. Both sides seem like that movie Idiocracy, like there is no reasonable answer.Just a lie that they defend, and act like they want to destroy you if you disagree.Actually the worse pollution we are suffering from is stupidity. Also I dont see why somebody should get rich from lying to the public. Its starting to seem like there is not much you can believe in the news any more.Like we are fed a bunch of lies to better somebodys bank account on their whim.Like we have to be good little sheeple and go along with the program. The level of the ocean is rising a little, ice is disappearing, and its probably being helped by pollution, but it was probably going to happen without pollution, and any time a big rock could hit the Earth and destroy life on it,or it could roll,or even slow down, drift in orbit, all the volcanoes could erupt at once,or we could have a nuclear war.Any of these things could make it hard to live here and probably happened before. The only real, actual, true side of the story would be to say there is a higher power that interacts with us from time to time, without whom we wouldnt exist. Not all of the stuff that is said about even that is true, and when they return it could be because of a severe disaster, maybe caused by them or their planet, and it could be happening shortly, like in the next 50 years. It could be that every 2000 or so years this happens and things get disrupted for a thousand or more years. Its hard to say what will happen in the future.I doubt that either side of the story is actually telling the truth about rising oceans. It could be because of another planet in our solar system getting closer and closer causing all of this stuff to happen, and that it will get worse.Just my guess and it could be as good as the others, except I dont get any big bucks for thinking it up.

Well, T-40, it sounds like you agree that there are two sides to global warming argument, now let me pose you a question, if the scientists and weathermen can't accurately forecast the weather next week, why would we trust them to predict it 100 years from now? Is it wise to base a policy that destroys our economy with burdensome taxes on industry (Cap and trade) on this premise? You do know, don't you, that when a corporation is taxed, they pass the tax onto the consumer? for example, have you checked your electric or telephone bill lately?

I agree with you about that. There is no way they can predict what will happen next week much less 100 years from now.I get it about corporations.I have owned my own business twice.I always knew the other side of politics had plenty of its own problems.Where I get in trouble with you is that you think the GOP is right. They actually are the most wrong at least in my opinion. The actual truth is probably both sides are worthless now.I would like to see a third party arise and get rid of this bunch of crooks, then form a new opposition party.I have always said this. However if I have to choose between nnalert who dont represent me,and nnalert that do represent me,I choose nnalert every time.nnalert are doing a lot less representing than they did at one time.Lyndon LaRouche should have been the nnalert or third party presidential candidate in the 70s that won instead of Carter and things would be a lot different now.Just my opinion,I know, but lots of political things are wrong now,and to think nnalert helped anything is Idiocracy. The thought of Reagan and Nixon and both Bushs damage done,is just plain annihilation of our country.Small towns, farms, way of life,is gone. You cant blame that on nnalert. The other stuff that went along with it drags us further in the hole.I dont like any of the politicians any more.Old people probably always got that way.

Well its still evident that your tinfoil hat is on straight, did you have it rewired for HDtinfoil? I never claimed that I like the nnalert, my vote goes to the conservative, who stands by his or her principals, like the runner up in the CA beauty contest! Problem is that the nnalert haven't been conservative since Reagan. I still vote for the person not the party. I will continue to vote for the person who is 1% more conservative than the other.

Thats fine. The problem is "conservative"lately has been interpreted as nnalert.Since nnalert appear to be the most corrupt and allowed more corruption in government(rigged stock market, defense spending thats clearly inflated about 10 times, and a long list of other crimes)and now we have a foreign owned news media that feeds us lies,so we dont even get news now.Thats the problem I have with Conservatives.I agree with the Miss America candidate, but she should not have been asked that question as it was unfair to her.If we could somehow get rid of the corruption among the conservatives they would be hard to beat, until that happens nobody is going to care what they say. These are the people with the tin foil hats that say one thing but turn their back as the country is raped and robbed by their own politicians. Not much to like about them as they are now.I disagree about Reagan, for the most part he was worse than Carter for what his policies did to the country.Thats why mom and dad both work to raise the kids now, making the whole country, family, life, way of life much worse.Nothing to brag about Reagan for.

Actually, that's one of the reasons I like Reagan, just the mention of him has you slobbering all over the keyboard. Jimmy Carter? As a president, he was a mediocre carpenter, and that's the kindest thing that can be said of him! Corruption in Conservatives? No comparison to the good ol' honest liberals! If you ever get to MD, Stop by, I'll give you a tinfoil hat that can hold a sixpack of koolaid for you to drink, while receiving signals from the mothership!
