Here I sit at 2oclock in the morning, unable to sleep, because of sciatica nerve problem in left leg, caused by sitting too long on a metal bleacher seat,Anybody have any how to get releaf for this problem? Have had it before and had to live with it,and do a lot of walking.

it hurts because it is pinched. Whiskey or 'shine is the only thing I ever found to dull it, & that doesn't always work. It will stop when it wants to.

Ken , I wish I knew more on sciatica ! Then I might be of some help . My problem is that I just dont like to sleep .

ken i feel for you i had h*** this past winter don"t know where you are in texas but if you are close to houston there is a Dr. Sassard at st. lukes in houston took a shot in the back but pain free for 2 months here is the link

I'll agree with 2x4 some what, after 25 years of trucking mostly off road and I mean OFF ROAD hauling logs in the northwest in the mts. and running skider. The best thing for me was if you can after a few drinks in a hot bath was take a walk get things to move, For me I really did't have the time. But when I did it seem to help me and I got rid of a soft bed the firmer the better. I used to sleep on the ground in the summer. But I'am thought of an old fart now so what I say won't make any diff. anyway. Good luck.

My dad had a lot of that years ago, he would go to the chiropractor and said it would help for a while. Chris

I know a fellow who has it who says stretching is the most effective way to deal with it. I think that the pain-killing methods could be more harmful in the long run because if you can't feel your pain you don't do things to reduce it and could end up making the problem worse in the long run.

Uncle was trucker for years, has a bad nerve. Never could get relief. Dad bought an inversion table (you strap in at the ankles, then roll over upside down). Dad had such relief from it, that the uncle tried it, and likes it real well! Greg

Used to have back and leg pain.(Sciatic nerve) one day so bad couldn't get out of bed. Long story shortened, ended up at physical therapy. Besides their stretches, I was given stretches to do at home. I do them every day and now almost never have pain. Do a search for stretches, back pain etc. They aren't difficult to do. Good luck.

One trip to the chiropractor and I am pain free. Once or twice a year, when I need it. I too drive a truck for construction, and get beat around quite a bit. Find a good one and you won't have any back pain.

Sciatica is caused by a disc pushing on your sciatic nerve where it exits your spine- it iis usally caused by an event or events that caused that disc to bulge a little and press on the nerve.I would take some Motrin to reduce the inflammation -Walk as much as I could -By walk I mean in good shoes that have cushioning -And walk for at least 1 hour or more per day--As long as walking doesn't offend your back-Walking wil provide blood flow to the injured area allowing it to heal much faster-Avoid sitting on bleachers, in overstuffed chairs-Lay on your back if you are going to watch TV -Also try to strehgthen your abdominal muscles-GOOD LUCK and I hope this helps you!

Keep everything out of your back pockets when you will be sitting for very long. A thick wallet or notebook will cause side stress on your lumbars especially the 5th lumbar and cause then to go out of alignment. This is especially true in a moving vehicle. Doc Kinsley told me this and it does help alot.

My Doctor says that a wallet in the back pocket often causes problems with the sciatic nerve. Remember how folks used to carry the wallet in the breast pocket of overalls.

Motrin something for the inflamation. Heating pad, push on the knot in yur hips to push the old blood out, stretch, sleep with pillow between your knees, and try a 1/4 inch lift under your right heel to staighten your hips. That is if the pain is going down the left leg, if right leg put lift under left heel.

i feel for you though i dont have your problem. i got some kind of virus/flu bug saturday afternoon had it untill midnight sunday .everything i ate or drank came back up within fifteen minuets.dont feel to bad right now other than really tired and wore out.just ate a bowl of oats so we will see what happens.hope you get to feelin better. RICK

Slipp3d Disc at 4-5 lower vertabrate and my right leg Sciatic put me in the emergency room at the hospital where this was diagnosed with MRI. Never had pain so intense. MD on call prescribed the usual such as has been offered on this forum but he also gave me a prescription for some pain pills with Morphine for 3 weeks use and those pills helped more than any thing. They gave me relief from pain and time to develop a system to relieve the pressure on the nerve till it healed and now I am pain free one year later. No more heavy lifting for sure.

I went through the same thing. 6 months of pysical therapy in 2003/ 2004 and I"ve been doing pretty well ever since. Still do the exercises on occassion and have learned what I can and can"t do.

I went to the chiropractor the last three weeks with lower back pain and sitting at our daughter's track meet made it unbearable. Sitting is the worst thing. I do my exercises as he prescribed and they help a bunch.

One thing that's overlooked by so many is a good pair of shoes, if flat footed get some supports also.

I fell at work in March; finally got therapy approval for electro stimulus and then traction. Had 1 session last Friday and now will do 3 times this week. No sleep is a bummer!!!

find a GOOD Chiropractor. They will take care of it for you. Trouble is finding a good one. Ask your friends and neighbors. I found mine by asking my family doctor.

Shoulder and hip pains so bad I finally went to a chiropractor. After six weeks still no relief. Afriend looked at my wrist watch and told me to remove it. After three days pain in shoulders and hips were gone and has not returned. A new China made watch band was to tight around my wrist. Thier arms are much smaller than ours. Use my cell phone to tell time now.lj

Had my first bout with sciatica nerve two years ago. I was laid up for two months. Doctor gave me some pain pills and said time would heal it. Walking bent over relieved the pain but my leg is still touchy. Exercise helps.

Sorry to hear about your Sciatica Ken.
The tip about no wallet, etc in back pocket during drives is a good one.
A friend had a disc trimmed and got rid of his sciatica.

Me not so lucky I have degenerative spinal disease, sciatica is a constant unwelcome companion.

I spent 14 years getting epidural's, until they stopped working..finally had a double fusion 4-4-08 am much better, now...not "perfect", but can walk and lift a whole lot better..!!

I had a home, portable lumbar traction device from the Veteran's Clinic I used to good effect..
I think an "Inversion Table" would be a great help.
I hear good things from people who have them..you get on and it tilts you up-side-down, so you stretch your spine..not all that expensive..I have even seen then at "Sam's Club"..
Good Luck, I do know the pain you are experiencing...
I do not regret getting the surgery..maybe you should look into it, and be done with the pain, once and for all.
Ron..

Buy the book "Treating Your Own Lower Back Pain" by Robyn McKenzie. Worked for me. If you know you"re going to do something that will aggrevate it, take a couple of ibruprofin a couple hours before.

Good luck, not fun.

Ok I admit I did not read this thread through But check your couch if it has a wood or metal edge at the front get a new couch.Hide-a bed type can be like this.

Empty pockets, looser fitting pants maybe. Bib overalls. If you have to wear a belt, adjust it so it rides in a better spot. Get used to carrying yourself and sitting as straight as possible. If you sit a lot, try one of the big balls. Looks kinda dorky but helps you build muscles and posture. Painkillers as a last resort they don"t fix anything just hide the symptom.
Look at accupressure and/or magnet therapy (google both and read up a little maybe get a book).

Maybe start with an alignment from a GOOD bone crusher but don"t make it a habit.

Good Luck.

Dave

Have had sciatica in the past and was a real killer every time.but this timeI was able to get out (when the sun came out)and start walking,in spite of the pain, and with in an hour I got easy.By the time Igot to my chiropractor(60 mile drive)the pain was almost completely gone(had an apontmentfor another problem)I could not believe that I got relief that easy,it is usually a couple of weeks or more. Thanks to every one that was concerned Ken in texas

I had two epidural nerve block shots and have since taken a glucosamine tablet every day. It's been 5 years since I had an attack.

I feel your pain. If I sit to long at a football game or such I can hardly walk at first.
I have always had very good results from my Chiropractor.
He has to stretch me first, then adjust me and finally gives me the heat and electric muscle stimulation treatment. One visit is all it takes.

I usually have to go about 4 or 5 times a year. My hips rock and pinch the nerve.

Good luck!

I'm an old timberman too. Truck, dozer, skidder operator & timber cutter. Sleep on a mattress on the floor now. In my camp bed I put 1/2 inch plywood piece under the mattress. But for years slept on carpeted floor as a soft bed would ruin me.

Have had two back operations for hurniated discs when I was 19 and another a year later.I'm 60 now and still have to deal with back pain.Chiropractor has helped through the years and recently bought a inversion table which is helping pull and take the pressure off the compressed discs.
