Ran across a auger for splitting wood that attaches to a post hole digger called "atom splitter." Has anyone used a this product or anything similar? I was curious how well it worked. Any comments would be appreciated.

Never used one on a post auger but we had one that used an auger type screw. It busted wood OK but dangerous a cocked cannon. Be very careful with that contraption.

If there is any way I can short of fowarding you aq thousand or so please walk away from it. It is a man killer ...period should be outlawed.

Ever wonder why something so simple and so much cheaper than the alternatives has never really caught on? Also, why aren't there dozens of glowing reports on the internet? Maybe because most of the owners don't have a hand left to type with. They are D.A.N.G.E.R.O.U.S. to say the very least.

My dad had one that bolted on the rear hub after jacking up and removing the rear wheel. Dang thing tried to kill us all, nobody ever user it that did'nt get hurt,or the truck fell off the blocks. The best thing was mamma putting in gas heat while the old mans broke leg healed,O the good times!

Don't know how you could be careful around one of those things. Neighbor had one run with a gear reduction gas engine. We hit a knot on a piece one day and bent the stop bar. Darn thing took off for the swamp a half turn of wood then a half turn of the engine at a time. It got down in the brush still roaring away and floppin' around down there. My neighbor ran in there after it. Looked a lot like Daniel Boone wrestling a bear to me. He finally yanked off the spark plug wire and killed it. Good thing he didn't need help--I was laughing too hard to be of any use. Needless to say that was the last time that thing was used. Funny now, but scary as heck at the time.

Heard about a fellow who had on a tractor PTO.He backed into a big Hemlock. It screwed into the tree and took the rest of the day to cut the tree down with out wrecking the tractor. If you find one bury it.

I had a bad experience with one when I was about 14 (almost 30 years ago).
I'm not even a safety zealot, but I'll never use one of those p.o.s. again.

It seems like just about everyone on this board is scared to death or berates this type of splitter. I have one (Bark Buster ?, label wore off) I use on the back of MF35 diesel and love it. There are some caveats. Our wood isn't huge (12-16 diam. maple, yellow birch), don't go crazy with the throttle, don't split short pieces, I reinforced the stop bar so it will no longer bend, installed drop legs from the table to give a more sturdy platform, have an accessible cable to fuel shut-off just in case, don’t get to close to the point of the auger, don’t wear floppy clothes and don’t force the wood (let the physics do the work). Make sure the stick extends 3-4 inches past the stop bar, lightly hold the stick against the auger point (may need some pressure to get through loose bark and catch into solid wood), when it catches step back. Respect this machine like you would any other.
Your mileage may vary, it works well for me.

Never tried one, never will.It is difficult to name any pto driven emplement that doesn't become extremly dangerous when you leave the tractor seat to approach it.If you insist on using an auger, get one like Paul fromMI used.you could sale admissions to watch somthing like that.

Don't mean to sound like a but, you'er better off with a singel bit, wedge, mall, might have a lot less pain in your life.

A friend of mine was using one one day, it caught his pant leg, (all it takes is to look away for a split second) and it darn near tore his leg off, and he darn near didn"t make it to the hospital alive. He lived, but he"ll never be the same again.
Don"t go near the thing, scrap it, or whatever you do, don"t use it. Darn things are dangerous to passersby even, if they don"t see the point ticking out of the grass, and heaven help anyone if they fall on one. I hate them.

I tryed one that fit on the PTO shaft, after using if a short while smoke was coming out of the seal on the PTO,They dont have thrust bearings
