Apology to all grit lovers

I forgot to let you folks know that the World Grits Festival was held this weekend in St. George SC. I am so sorry that I let Yall down. I am sure that many of you really appreciate a good grit, yellow or white, and would love to have the chance to dive into a huge bowl of grits, literally. The best I can do is tell you to mark the week after Easter on your calender and I will try and do better about reminding you. St. George is midway across the state right on I 95. I would say to look for me there but I don't do large crowds of strange people, but I'm sure most of you will feel right at home. Yall have a nice day.

I like mine yellow with some sausage mixed in. Or with some red eye gravy and country ham on the side, along with fresh biscuits.

GRITS-YES
MUSH-NO
Not the same thing.
I like mine with brown sugar.
I think I will go cook some, Apologies to true southerners, cause they will be "instant".
Momma was a southern girl,...Coloken

Grits are ground up corn but you have to make Hominy from the corn, then grind the hominy to get "Hominy Grits". with Mush you just grind corn the taste is quiet different. A lot of farm people served Mush for Brekfast in these Hills. Being from Western West Virginia you would think I would have been raised on Grits but neaver ate them untill I was stationed in Austin Texas. learned to love them I guess I am a Southern Rebel at Heart!!. I'll neaver forget a little Texas gal I use to date when told her I wasn't from Texas she asked "what are you a Yankee". if you wasn't from Texas you were a Yankee to her. I didn't have the hart to tell her that all my G-Great Grand Fathers Fought in the Civil War for the South.

While I know all you Yankee's that live above 30° latitude may eat differant kinds of grits; here in the deep south we love White Hominy grits.

A good bowl of grits should have butter and salt and may have a meat like bacon or ham mixed in. It should NEVER have milk or sugar.
While it is meant to be a side dish for eggs we often eat it as a stand alone meal for breakfast.

Now you guys are making me hungry. I will take 2 eggs over easy; grits and ham; and a good cup of coffee with chicory brewed thick enough you can almost stand a spoon up in it.

You've made me hungry and I just had breakfast. I love a lot of things about the South but grits are right up there on the list. They just never caught on up north. We can't get them except for the make believe instant ones that people walk right by. Most people who were never in the Army don't even know what they are. Hey, I like mine with butter (lots) and pepper. No salt, thank you. Eggs, bacon or ham. What a wonderful meal. One thing I don't like about the South? GNATS! (Or do you have them trained to only bother Yankees?)

(quoted from post at 07:14:30 04/19/09) "instant"
What is instant grits?????????

No self respecting southerner would be caught eating instant make believe grits.
John, I just do the best I can with whats available. Can't get that "imported" stuff. If old man Walmart were still alive, maybe he would stock it for us.

just finished breakfast, had some pancakes with the last of maple syrup from "08. still sugaring up in Vt. Last night temperature was 30* sap is risin. Looks like it will be a good in the part of Vermont where I live. Last year, I think, VT produced about 500,000 gal. When you think it takes 40-50 gals of sap to make 1 gal of syrup, thats alot of boiling. Dave

Good one John, and all true. I went up north for boot camp in the Navy. Sure was glad to get back to the south. Where real people live.

I like mine with 2 eggs, and grits mixed together, sauage, and bisquits on the side, and good hot coffee, the 'yanks' don't know what they are missin'.cw

What about some-a-that chipped (or creamed) beef on toast; never went thru a chow line where it was served without hearing a bunch of b$tching, but everyone always sopped their tray for the last bite. Let's see, what was it that the Army called it..........

Yes Sept to Dec 1968. Made us sleep with the windows open. Said it would keep us healthy. Never did understand why I had to walk the fence looking for grass fires. With snow on the ground.

My Great Great Grandfather and Grandmother owned that land prior to it becoming a naval base. They weren't there very long though. They couldn't live with that cold wind off the lake. They moved north to Wisconsin where it was more comfortable.

If You folks like grits You really need to try chitterlings. We have a festival for that in SC as well I find out when it is and let Yall Know.

lovem with my eggs over easy, bacon sausage or scrappel. Hashbrowns, toast, coffee and hot sauce on all.

I can see why they moved. Was never so cold in my life. I think it was warmer in the freezer in the mess hall than it was outside.

Had no red eye gravy for over 50 years. Dang! Thats what? Ham grease and water. Could use it right now.

Nope! ground corn is CORN MEAL as in used to make corn bread and hush puppies also handy for some folks to ruin a good fish fry. Grits is ground hominy, Gods gift to southerners for putting up with heat, bugs, and Yankees :)
