Saw The Steel Drivers last night. WOW! Their CDs don't even BEGIN to do them justice. Casey, you were right. Your buddy Chris was AWESOME! Sure doesn't look like he could sing like that does he? They got 2 standing ovations and constant allpause during the songs when they were each doing solos. That gal on the fiddle...no words to describe her. Thought she was gonna set fire to that thing. Her high harmony was as amazing as her playing. I'll let you guys here in Michigan know when the show will air on the radio. The host said it would probably be about 3 months. Any of you get the chance to see these guys,DON'T MISS THEM!

You can always spot the folks at a show or a festival that are new to bluegrass. They've grown up with other music where it's terribly embarrasing to burst into applause only to find that they're not done, it was only a three-beat rest in the musical score. Bluegrass, it's just fine to applaud or give a whoop for a nice break or a really slick instrumental or vocal lick.

I've played in front of audiences of the "polite" type, and wondered sometimes of they were awake. In fairness, they weren't rude or unappreciative, they just didn't know that it was okay to clap.

My wife said there were 2 girls in the restroom after the show who were obviously college girls. One said she couldn't believe how great the show was. Said she never dreamed she would like Bluegrass, but it was awesome! I sure didn't hear anybody say anything negative when we were leaving.

Chris always could sing, as far back as I can remember, and I"ve known him since grade school. And the rest of the band is amazing. they just seem to really click and have a great thing going. I know Chris also writes songs on the side, well, that"s really how he got his start, he"s had several fairly big hits in the "new" country world. I know he"s wrote for Tim McGraw, Brooks and Dunn, Julie Roberts, Daryl Worley, Trent Wilmon, Gary Allan, Patty Loveless, Brad Paisley, Trace Adkins, Lee Ann Womack, Montgomery Gentry, and the Lonesome River Band. Here"s a link to there Myspace page.

Chris has also got a "budding" rock called the Jompson Brothers Band...I know they"ve recorded a few things, but I"ve only heard a demo, don"t know much else about them, other than they;ve got a Myspace page to at
http://www.myspace.com/thejompsonbrothersband

For the record, Blue Side of the Mountain is incredible on the album, and will absolutly knock your socks off live.
The Steeldrivers

Yup,great song. They said he's written 2 songs that went to number one on the country charts in the last 2 years. They did a lot of stuff last night that he and Mike had written together. "Sticks that made thunder" gave me goose bumps. Got them now just thinking about it. The wife had to buy their live and studio CDs last night before we left. Almost wished she hadn't. We listened on the way home and they just didn't do justice to the live show. Not to say that the CDs weren't good. Mind bogling is all I can say. Mama was compairing them to Alison Kraus and Union Station.

Primarily guitar. Fill in on bass occasionally. Mandolin never has been quite ready for primetime, it goes out in public only for old-style duets, what I call "brothers music" as in Monroe, Louvin, Bolick, Lilly, Delmore . . .

You lucky dog! Miss MN and I love The Steeldrivers! We JUST got back from seeing The High 48's in Bemidji. They're from Minneapolis and pretty darn good.

ALL RIGHT!! I play Guitar, play WITH banjo, and I just own a mandoline and a fiddle.

Where do you live Scott?

I'm in So. Illinois.

Paul

Thanks for the reply Scott.

I doubt if we'll ever get to pick together.

Good to hear from a bluegrass lover.

Best wishes,
Paul
