How often to fertilize or seed timothy

How often would someone recommend to fertilize or seed a hayfield of all timothy? It's a relatively smaller field and hasnt been fertilized for a few years. Also, someone told me that timothy has to be re-seeded every few years, is that true?

We haven't sown timothy since 1947 (the last year we had horses) but there is still timothy growing around in fence lines, lanes, etc.

Msb is right about gettin fertilizer on it immediately or sooner. As far as adding seed. Here in NY orchard grass tends to crowd timothy out so I don't know if reseeding it will work. Since you have a small plot give it a try and let us know.

Timothy seeds out in the mid to end of june. Like any other forage, cut before seeds head ou. It only seeds once, so you need to reseed about every three years or so.

Around here (sw Pa), a new seeding of Timothy only last a couple years. Seems wild grass & orchid grass takes over. I have a hunch that since Timothy matures so late in the summer that it gets cut & baled before it gets a chance to reseed itself.

My experience is you can try to overseed but you won't have any luck, most of the older farmers around here like to cut it when it's seeding which is so wrong, your best nutrient value is at the boot stage or shortly thereafter. they think the same, it will reseed itself, some of the older varieties this might work but not with the ones I've used. In your situation do a soil sample and find out what your soil needs to grow your expectations, then you'll know exactly what your're dealing with and it could save you alot of money before you start dumping fertilizer on it and not getting good results. Good luck!!
