Farmall 450 Hydraulic Power Steering-Low or No Pressure

Hello Everyone,
I have been trying to slowly restore a Farmall 450 (I believe its a '57)that I inherited. The tractor works well, except that the power steering doesn't work. I know my dad and grandpa tried to fix this probably 6-8 years ago. I am not sure exactly what they did-I think they replaced some valves. Has anyone had a similar problem or suggestions.

Thanks in advance,
Richard Johnson

Could be anything from a problem with the main hydraulic pump; the flow priority divider; or the steering unit itself.
If it is a factory unit, it was made by Behlen. They also made the one for the Allis WD45 when so equipped.

When you turn the steering wheel do you feel any surge on the steering wheel at all? When you release pressure on the steering wheel does it move back against the direction you are turning it a slight amount?

Does your tractor have a separate PS pump or does it use a priority flow divider valve?

If it has the flow splitter try operating the power steering while holding the valve for the lift arms in the raise position, continue to hold the valve while the lift arms are stalled out in the maximum raised position. If the PS works while the arms are stalled out and still have pressure applied that indicates a bad regulating valve in the flow divider section of the valve , that is the first valve section on the left side of the valve bank of valves.

Your flow divider valve is shot. You'll have replace your priorty valve. Steel Wheel Ranch has rebuilts for sale. Don't try a used one because it is as bad as the one you have
