i have a ford tractor, serial #9N219618, it has a six blade fan, 4 speed forward transmission, side mount distributor. i installed brakes and seals last week. because i was lead to believe it was a 8N i also got the inner seals. the axle housing (trumpet) was not machined to recieve the seal nor was the axle machined to ride smoothly inside the seal. both brake pedals are on the right side, it has foot boards and not pegs.

its a 9N, a little different then the 8N and made before it.

The 9N only had a three speed transmission though, so your transmission is from an 8N.

Its a mix of 8N and 9N parts. sounds like the back of the tractor is from an 8N

Holly, as Lanse said, it sounds like you have the front half (motor/ transmission) from a 8N and the axle trumpets from a 9N. Post your question on the N Board and someone there will help you out. Good luck with your project.

Sounds like you have a real mutt on your hands. A mutt is a tractor built form 2 or 3 other tractors to make one sort of good one. Serial number is you got it off the left side of the engine says 9N but you say it has a side mount distributor which no 9N had so maybe you did not get the numbers from the correct place. 4 speed says 8N if it has a flat head engine that is. If it has a valve in head engine then you could have a number of other models

I think you have misread the serial number. No 9N block could have been chainged over to a side distribuator that you say you have so if it is a flat head it has to be a later 8N engine and the 4 speed was only in the 8N or newer as the NAA and the brakes on the 4 speeds were both on the right sides. The 9N-2N were 3 speed tractors and the brakes could not have been chainged on a 3 speed to be on right side. Thr reading that serial number again. That 9 at the front of your serial number if you look at it close enough will probably be a poorly hand stamped 8

Sounds like an 8N to me. Side mount distributor was not available in 9N/2N. niether was a 4 speed. Got a pic?
