Heard on the radio yesterday that this fool moved here (Canada) last year from Turkey and the other day jumps the fence of a flight school in Ontario and goes "joy flying".Than he flew into U.S. air space where he was welcomed by two F-16 jets carying missle's.His adventure lasted 6 hours before he landed. There was an update this morning that he may face up to 10 years in prison, but here's the kicker. He's claiming that he wanted to commit suicide by having the jets blow him out of the sky.Unless your justice is alot better than ours, than that will hold up in court, some psyciatric treatment and evaluation and he will be out in no time.pd.

your so right, but how did he have the fuel for 5 hours? also I promise you if they want to you WILL go to the ground

i read that today on yahoo. norad said they decided not to shoot him down as he was deemed not an imminent threat. i think the news said he flew and landed in missouri along some highway, hitched a ride to a git-n-go, bought a gatorade and waited for the police to show up. i didnt think a cessna could fly that far on the fuel on board.

He did have a forty mph tail wind helping him along. I think the range on that plane is 1300 miles. IF he wanted to die, why'd he run it nearly empty then land?

He was an nnalert middle-eastern male age 31. Why would anyone be suspicious of him? And besides, we would be criticized for "profiling". He had changed his name from Yavz Berke to Adam Dylan. He took off from Thunder Bay, Ontario and headed just about straight south over Lake Superior where he was intercepted by two Minnesota Air National Guard F-16s out of Duluth, who then handed him off to two Wisconsin Air Guard F-16s who were preparing to hand him off to two more F-16s from the Louisiana Guard when he landed, some 5+ hours and 700+ miles into his flight. The Cessna 172 has a published range of 610 nautical miles which is equivalent to 701.5 statute miles. He probably had a tail wind component but I would bet he was out of gas when he landed. NORAD spokesman said they "never considered" shooting him down. They further stated that, while "use of lethal force" is always a possibility, they had determined early on that he did not "have hostile intent". Something like this occurs about 30 times per year according to NORAD.

This airplane was a Cessna 172 with a max cruising speed of 115 knots and fuel duration of 4.5 hours or at economy cruise could remain airborn at 100 knots for about 5.5 hours so no way is he going to fly more then 650 miles even with a tailwind.
The pilots of the F-16's had no reason to believe there was any security threat from the pilot or airplane, so the logical course of action was to try to talk him into landing or wait out the duration of fuel when he had to land then take him into custody... Gene

Incase anyone was wondering,I have absolutely no quams with the military taking due precautions,I just don't understand how he could say he was trying to end his life, there must be alot simplier ways to do that lol .pd

I think he'd been down here to Georgia and got a load of pollen. Took it back up to Canada, loaded it in the plane and took off. Tried to make the whole Northern US miserable. What else was his motive? David Where everything is yellow...................

I am AOPA 03580918. If he didn't want to get shot down, he should be squawking 7700. Standard procedure.

Even with radio failure, should acknowledge military fighters and follow to nearby airport.

AOPA has issued a statement defending the lack of intervention, meaning not shooting him down. AOPA takes the position that a Cessna 172 would do no major damage as it can't carry enough fuel or explosives to be a major threat.

In this instance, I will give the decision makers a pass on this. To shoot down an unarmed plane with an nnalert crazy man in it wouldn't look good.

I just hope this won't entice other crazy radicals to "take flight" and maybe actually at least try to take out a location of historical value or the like that are not protected by "TFR'S" (temporary flight restrictions). DOUG

He wanted to be shot down so as to become a martyr to his rag head buddies. Is it not a coincidence that the anointed one was in Turkey about the time this was going on?

I am glad we didn't shoot him down, be the ruination of a perfectly good 172 and not worth his towel head hide.

I'm sure there is dancing in the streets in Turkey because of his successful one-man invasion of US airspace. I bet he brought a pocketful of Canadian coins to plug up our vending machines as well.
