Hey guys thanks to those of you that gave advice I got two black angus, one registered the other non registered and goin back this weekend to get one more registered one. Were breedin the two registered ones and slaughterin the other. Do I need to put a magnesium block out? They have a fresh creek to drink from and all the grass and hay they want. What else to do? Theyve been shot and wormed.

If it's not too personal could you say where you are and what you paid. I've been watching prices in South Texas plummet and would like to see what the rest of the world is supporting. I'm thinking about picking up 3 Belted Galloways.

Ya, were takeing 4 dairy replacements to auction tomarrow, cant even begin to think what there gonna bring, with milk priceses down so much!

Magnesium supplement would be good before they get on pasture....make sure they have been nnalert for blackleg if the cattle are going to be around the creek.....Been there done that...didnt like it....:(

I'd just get a good mineral supplement(bagged or block), if they are going to be grazing fescue, get a high mag. mineral.

Where are you located...state not specific area. Black Angus around here (South Texas) are bringing slightly less than that. Good luck with your new additions.

A magnesium block, or just hi-mag mineral, isn"t a bad idea. It doesn"t happen often, but I have had a cow or two end up with grass tetany before. You will only need to feed it while the grass is young and growing fast in the Spring. By mid May or so you should be fine, and probably will not need it. We did have a spell of wet weather once in June and the grass took off again and I had a cow come down with grass tetany though. I usually fed hi-mag mineral year round after that. Cheap insurance, it doesn"t cost very much extra at all, and is cheaper than a vet call or lost cow. Good luck with your endeavour!
