Ford 4830 Alternator??

Tractor quit charging over the weekend. Called the dealer, wants $338 for a new one. Does anybody happen to know what the NAPA part number is or what it cross references to?? And believe it or not, there are no decent rebuild shops around. Any other sources?? I found one on ebay for $150 but it doesn't say anything about it and especially on electrical parts, I'd prefer not to buy chinese junk. Thanks,

Casey

Please determine what component failed and why before you start throwing parts at it. People have spent a lot of money on electrical systems because of misdiagnosis. Learn how to determine the problem or get someone to help you before you buy parts foreign, domestic or unknown.

Well...I'm pretty sure it has the voltage regulator built in to the alternator...so if it's not charging...I'm guessing its the alternator...that, or maybe the belt, but its still spins when the motor's running, so I ruled that out first...

I am think'n you are a good ways east of me but there is a GREAT rebuild joint in Henderson.

If you don't want junk, don't get a rebuilt one from NAPA, they just shut down the RAYLOC plant in Morganfield and moved production to Mexico last fall.

It's a Lucas alternator, Ford part number is either E7NN-10B376-AB or F0NN-10B376-BB, I'm pretty sure they interchange. I'm not for certain, but I think the New Holland part number is 81863039. Thanks for the input.

Did you do any troubleshooting? At the very least, take the thing apart and see if the brushes are worn away.

There's basically three things that can go wrong with that system.... a bad alternator. A bad temperature pad under the battery or bad wiring between the battery pad and alt.
Other than wiring problems a Delco 10si alternator is cheaper than either of the other two.
I forget now if you need to alter the lower bracket or not, but if you do it's minor, then make a new top bracket... then wire the dash light into the sense circuit on the alt. Problem solved. I get them at Napa. Just try ro find one with a 'B' series pulley. That makes life easier.

Appreciate it...exactly the info I was looking for. RickB tells me that I might be able to get an exact fit remanufactured from New Holland for less than $200...now if I can just get my local dealer to figure that out...never have liked him, always been way to high on stuff...

Casey, where abouts in Kentucky are you? If you are near Lexington, take it to C&M auto electric and have them test it. They will tell you if the alternator is good and what to look at next. We have a 6610 with the same set up and it has burned up 2 or 3 "battery temperature sensors" and those things are a pretty penny. Also, just to note, I haven't confirmed for sure, but I know the Lucas alternator out of an MGB (which has the same clocking as our Ford Lucas alternator) can be replaced with a Saturn alternator that is much more reliable, puts out more amps, and charges at lower RPMS. Do a google search or ebay search for MGB Alternator 96 amp.

I'd expect the brushes are shot in this one. That's what went in the last one I turfed.
I'd not be entirely against a reman Lucas if you have ready access to them and the price is reasonable... but I go with the Delco because I can get the darn thing off the shelf in 15 minutes at my local Napa for about a hundred bucks and it's got a 1 year warranty.
I don't know what my NH dealer would do for warranty, but I'd expect that if I went 9 months down the road, it's probably my problem....
Thus far I haven't had any trouble with the Delco's I've installed.

Where are you in KY , there is a good shop in Huntington WV , Doesn't charge an arm and legg to fix starters and alternators Charged me $45 to fex starter and $65 to fix an alternator put a new regulater in it.

Who and where in Huntington?? I'm about an hour south soutwest of Huntington...go there pretty often, in fact, Davis equipment in Ashland is the closest New Holland dealer...wanted $338 for a new Lucas...crazy.
