OT--88 truck ,TBI floods , timming gets advanced

88 dodge truck with 5.2,TBI and auto starts good. As it runs for 5-10 minutes, it starts to flood out. I can really smell gas and it starts to run bad. May even die. The timming seems to be over advanced when trying to restart. Fires too early, kicks back and pops though TBI I don't try too hard to get it restarted, for fear of breaking the starter. If I do start it, the temp gauge moves to higher end after a couple minutes.
Let it sit overnite and it starts just fine again.
Sensors seem to test ok. Have tried different computer. What could cause the flooding and over advance besides computer?

Seen lot of these with cracked heads or intakes . Leaks coolant into combustion chamber . This may explain the hard starting /cranking, possible hydro lock. Could explain overheating too . I'd plug the plugs , check for coolant on them, crank it over with plugs out , see if you get any coolant blowing out . Also leave rad cap off, hook up air to each cylinder, crank over, see if you get bubbles or coolant blowing out of rad.

Can you install a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail to check the pressure? I saw that happen where it ran rough and rich and the fuel pressure regulator was bad. It did not always do it but when it began to run rough the fuel pressure went up extremely high.

my 88 ford ranger was doing about the same thing.changed oxygen sensor all was ok,however the coolant sensor can cause the same thing.you really need the codes run

change the two wire coolant temp sensor, this is the one the computer reads. Likely it is telling the computer it is -40*. Also change the connector.

no code will be set because the computer isn't all that smart.

A friend's slightly newer Dodge 318 was recently acting in a similar manner and replacing the carbon-tracked and corroded distributor cap and one spark plug wire fixed it right up.

(He bought a complete set, we just put the one on 'cause it was below zero at the time. I recently reminded him to finish the job!)

fault codes are 33,37,45 33 is always present. 37 ans 45 can be zeroed but come back after truck runs.I don't think these codes apply to the engine.

Code 33 is for the A/C compressor relay circuit. 37 is the torque converter clutch solenoid not locking when commanded. 45 is for the overdrive solenoid in the incorrect state. None of these codes are engine performance related and do not set the check engine light.
You need to see some live data if the PCM can display it on a scan tool. I'm pretty sure though an 88 model year can't do that though. I've seen coolant temp sensors fail showing the engine colder than it actually is and causing the PCM to deliver too much fuel. A skewed oxygen sensor can do it too.

Just had very similar symtoms with 1988 GMC 305 TBI engine. It would start when cold but run rough. The longer it ran (getting warmer) it would flood to distraction, was expecting to see raw gas dripping out the tail pipe :-0
Mech friend said pull plug off coolant sensor(controls MAP, etc). Engine cleared up under five minutes from not being able to run. I ordered new sensor.

the coolant and oxygen sensors could make it kick back and pop though TBI? acts the same when they are unhooked. seems like it would stay in open loop when they are unhooked.
